Structure and Agency: Exploring Aspirations of Youth Trainees

This work explores the aspirations of young people in a youth training programme and how structure and agency shape their aspirations. Transition policy is currently based on the pathways framework which provides many different educational and training ‘pathways’ to assist young people to move from school to work. For youth in Youth Training their ‘pathway’ is often non-linear and complex; not having followed conventional or mainstream transitional markers they are easily labelled problem-youth and ‘at-risk’ or vulnerable to failure. This study endeavoured to move beyond the labels of young in Youth Training to explore their stories in the context of the lived-experiences. It gave them the opportunity to voice their aspirations for the future and considered the structure or societal constraints associated with their transitional experience.

Capital Structure refers to the combination of debt and equity utilized in a business. There are different advantages and disadvantages of using both sources of finance, but basically, this combination is determined by different variables most important are size, profitability. Non Debt Tax Shield, tangibility, earning volatility and growth of an organization. This work is based on the data from Karachi Stock Exchange. Tangibility variable was found to be highly significant, which favors the Trade off theory. Size variable does not favor the Trade Off Theory. Capital Structure: Evidence from Nigerian Stock Exchange

This paper examines the effects of capital structure on performance of quoted non-financial firms in Nigeria between 1996 and 2012. The study employed both the first and second generation econometrics method of panel unit root test, principal component analysis, and Generalized Method of Moments. Using return on assets, returns on equity, price earnings ratio, Tobin’s Q, and constructed Performance Index as measures of firm performance and debt ratio as a measure of capital structure. Our result showed that capital structure has a negative and significant relationship with firm performance. The study concluded that the agency costs of the non-financial firms under the Nigerian Stock Exchange are very high and these lead to negative performance.

Agency, Structure and the NEET Policy Problem: The Experiences of Young People

For many years, government policy has associated young people ‘being NEET’ (Not in Education, Employment or Training) with educational underachievement, worklessness, generational poverty, poor health, antisocial behaviour, and reduced life expectancies. Researchers and policymakers continue to debate whether young people become NEET as a result of their own choices (i.e. their personal agency), or as a result of external factors (i.e. social, political and economic structures). Most recognise that the truth is somewhere between the two, but a clear understanding of how each interacts in causing young people to become NEET has so far been elusive, making the development of effective policy and practice problematic. Agency, Structure and the NEET Policy Problem makes headway against this problem through an original approach that draws on social cognitive theory and the lived experiences of young people themselves. Investigating the lives of NEET young people between the ages of 17-21 in London, this book elucidates the interactions between agency and structure that lead to them becoming NEET, and in doing so, offers a new perspective on the phenomenon. It offers a valuable critique of existing policy, providing both breadth and detail on the factors affecting the trajectories of young people in their transitions to continued education, training, or employment. It offers a way forward for all who are interested in developing, supporting and implementing a revitalised approach to NEET policy and practice, and a framework around which a coherent multidisciplinary approach to addressing NEET could be developed.

Capital Structure, Equity Ownership and Firm Performance

This study investigated the relationship between capital structure, equity ownership and firm performance using a sample from BSE-Listed Indian companies over the period of five years (2005-2010). The study constructs efficiency through data envelopment analysis (DEA). Using panel data analysis to examine the effect of efficiency on leverage and the empirical validity of the two competing hypotheses such as efficient risk hypothesis and franchise value hypothesis. The study results were consistent with the Jensen and Meckling (1975) agency cost model and we didn't found any significant impact of efficiency on leverage. There is evidence towards non-linearity in the relationship between ownership type with capital structure and firms performance. During the study time period the efficiency and the number of efficient companies in India had been decreasing due to the recession that broke out at mid-2008

The study aims to bridge the gap in literature by establishing the connection between corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost. It also examines the moderating role of agency cost on the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and firm performance, to validate whether in the presence of agency cost the corporate entrepreneurship yields high profit or not. Beginning with theoretical background of corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost, this study proposes a model to test, empirically, the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost. The findings highlight the significant negative relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost, while no moderating impact of agency cost has been found on the link between corporate entrepreneurship and firm performance. It also presents that the impact of corporate entrepreneurship is more negatively significant on agency cost reflecting that corporate entrepreneurship can act as an excellent technique in reducing agency problems within organizations that leads to high performance.

It is also analyses the association of agency and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) young women. The study utilizes data from “Youth in India: Situation and Needs, 2006-2007”survey. Bivariate and Multivariate techniques are used to understand the differentials, and factors associated with agency and Sexual and reproductive health. The Principal Component Analysis is used to compute the agency based on three indices namely decision making, freedom of movement, and self efficacy. The multinomial logistic regression is used to understand the factor associated with sexual and reproductive health knowledge. Higher Educated and economically better off women, more exposed to mass media, living in urban area have higher agency for both married and unmarried women. Findings reveals that women having higher agency are found to have higher odds of better knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

The Agency of Women over Two Generations

The book explores one of the most critical concepts in gender theories. It attempts to understand the ''agency'' of the diasporic subjects. It locates agency in the personal narratives of two generations of Bangladeshi immigrant women in the United Kingdom (UK). The author problematizes the liberal notion of autonomy which considers religion as an obstacle to women''s agency. She uncouples agency from resistance, choice and the provision of change without nullifying the latter concepts within agency. The book defines agency as the ‘strategies'' that women use to lead their lives in different ways. One of the central arguments of this book is that there is none without agency, nor is someone with more agency or with less agency. Everyone has agency, but everyone has different forms of agency. This is an important book for the academics, gender specialists, development practitioners and policymakers who are interested in ''gender and migration'' issues.

Revision with unchanged content. Very little empirical research exists that attempts to measure the effectiveness of corporate governance on innovativeness. For this it is crucial to consider the two main approaches (agency theory and stewardship theory) to corporate governance. However, the theory of corporate governance is strongly influenced by agency theoretical considerations. This book, first, attempts to show the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms and innovativeness. Thereby, the agency approach to corporate governance is questioned. Further, the influence of culture as an external variable to the practice of corporate governance is considered. The corporate governance mechanisms ownership structure, board composition and CEO duality have beside control and incentive systems significant influence on a firm’s innovativeness. Furthermore, empirical findings show that stewardship theory is generally more effective in corporate governance in context with innovativeness then agency theory. Finally, an own theoretical framework is developed that shows that the influence of the theoretical approaches to corporate governance is dependent on the organization’s situational culture type. This book is targeted to researchers, students and consultants and everyone else showing interest in organizational behaviour.

Instruments for Private Employment Agencies

The objective of this research is to define the set of viable strategies of a private employment agency and the instruments it may use to implement them. To reach this goal, four key questions must be addressed: 1) how did agency work originate, and where is it going? 2) how can agency work be done, and how can it be regulated? 3) what are the factors behind demand and supply for agency work services? 4)what instruments may be used by agencies to overcome the problem of commodification and to construct new markets? An agency seeking to overcome the commodification problem and establish a market position in a market segment with greater added value should intensify its relationships with the worker, with client firms and with society. This entails moving away from a concept of agency work as an activity resembling of “product intermediaries”. Instruments for evolving agency work are reviewed and conditions for their application are illustrated. The key concept is to develop a long term strategy aimed at becoming a partner in the management of the human capital of client firms, not just a supplier of peripheral skills for short-term assignments.

Using various measurements of corporate performance, the results of this study suggest that firm’s capital structure has a significant negative impact on the firm’s accounting performance which indicates that agency cost problem can affect Malaysian companies followed by high debt policies, consequently resulting in lower firm performance. However, results also suggest that all capital structure ratios except short-term debt ratio have significant positive influence on market performance measurements, which indicates that capital structure and firm performance depend on rising share prices that affect positively on firm’s market performance ratio. The main value of this study is the analysis of the impact of various capital structure measures on corporate performance of Malaysian companies.

To seek answers to these questions, eight explanatory variables were regressed against dependent variables Total Debt Ratio, Long-Term Debt Ratio and Short-Term Debt Ratio. The results show that Tangibility, Firm Growth, Age of the Firm, Firm Size, Earnings Volatility and Non Debt Tax Shields variables are the significant determinants of capital structure of Ethiopian manufacturing firms in at least one out of the three models for capital structure employed in the study. In addition, many convincing evidences are in favor of Information Asymmetry and Agency Cost Theories, though there are little evidences backing Trade-off Theory. Moreover, this paper highlights the major problems by limiting itself to manufacturing sector of economy.

The determinants of capital structure identified based on previous studies, namely, age, size, ownership, R&D and collateral are regressed against the source of finance, namely, personal saving and funds from families and friends, retained profit, total debt, short term debt, long term debt and external equity. The Multivariate regression results suggest that age, ownership, and the provision of collateral are most important determinants of the capital structure of SMEs in Mekelle city. Furthermore the sector classifications are regressed in the independent variable as dummy variables to examine the stability and variability of the regression coefficients across sectors. In order to shed further light other than the multivariate analysis, the study also employed five point likert-scales to investigate the attitudes and perception of the owner-managers of SMEs towards the source of finance.

In the first place, the Internet can be an empowering agent by challenging authority; at the same time, kinship’s social and moral codes can structure the reflexivity, Structuration, and agency that users derive from the Internet. This book argues that there is a symbiotic relationship between the Internet and kinship. Situating Internet usage within kinship would challenge technological determinism. Furthermore, the book explains how and why an anthropological approach to media, including the Internet, would be especially suitable for exploring the Internet’s functions in users’ lives. Finally, the book uses an interview of an Arab woman student (who was in the University of Texas in Austin at the time of the writing) to support its argument.
