Structure and Agency: Exploring Aspirations of Youth Trainees

5283 руб.
This work explores the aspirations of young people in a youth training programme and how structure and agency shape their aspirations. Transition policy is currently based on the pathways framework which provides many different educational and training ‘pathways’ to assist young people to move from school to work. For youth in Youth Training their ‘pathway’ is often non-linear and complex; not having followed conventional or mainstream transitional markers they are easily labelled problem-youth and ‘at-risk’ or vulnerable to failure. This study endeavoured to move beyond the labels of young in Youth Training to explore their stories in the context of the lived-experiences. It gave them the opportunity to voice their aspirations for the future and considered the structure or societal constraints associated with their transitional experience.

Agency, Structure and the NEET Policy Problem: The Experiences of Young People

9801 руб.
For many years, government policy has associated young people ‘being NEET’ (Not in Education, Employment or Training) with educational underachievement, worklessness, generational poverty, poor health, antisocial behaviour, and reduced life expectancies. Researchers and policymakers continue to debate whether young people become NEET as a result of their own choices (i.e. their personal agency), or as a result of external factors (i.e. social, political and economic structures). Most recognise that the truth is somewhere between the two, but a clear understanding of how each interacts in causing young people to become NEET has so far been elusive, making the development of effective policy and practice problematic. Agency, Structure and the NEET Policy Problem makes headway against this problem through an original approach that draws on social cognitive theory and the lived experiences of young people themselves. Investigating the lives of NEET young people between the ages of 17-21 in London, this book elucidates the interactions between agency and structure that lead to them becoming NEET, and in doing so, offers a new perspective on the phenomenon. It offers a valuable critique of existing policy, providing both breadth and detail on the factors affecting the trajectories of young people in their transitions to continued education, training, or employment. It offers a way forward for all who are interested in developing, supporting and implementing a revitalised approach to NEET policy and practice, and a framework around which a coherent multidisciplinary approach to addressing NEET could be developed.

This is a study of food and cooking practices within the theoretical framework of critical realism. The contribution of food to the Western public discourse is well documented and its symbolic significance is the subject of numerous studies. The literature review of this book focuses on the potential sources of the symbolic role of food, tracing its elevation to an exalted form of post-modernist consciousness under the heading of foodieism. The culturally omnivorous nature of foodieism is then related to literature based on the food neophilia model. Practice theories and reflexivity are discussed as tools of understanding how individuals partake in these social trends. The empirical findings supported the proposition that food-related practices are homologous to the wider concerns and projects of each individual and they do tend to play a significant perceived role in their realisation. The literature was validated, though one should not make too strong claims about the strength of neophilia, or the symbolic significance of food. At least one micro-social type emerged, the enthusiastic metareflexive experimentalist.

The book applies the theories of Structuration and reflexivity to the Internet in Amman, Jordan, to argue how the Internet can challenge authority as embedded in kinship social formations. In the first place, the Internet can be an empowering agent by challenging authority; at the same time, kinship’s social and moral codes can structure the reflexivity, Structuration, and agency that users derive from the Internet. This book argues that there is a symbiotic relationship between the Internet and kinship. Situating Internet usage within kinship would challenge technological determinism. Furthermore, the book explains how and why an anthropological approach to media, including the Internet, would be especially suitable for exploring the Internet’s functions in users’ lives. Finally, the book uses an interview of an Arab woman student (who was in the University of Texas in Austin at the time of the writing) to support its argument.

Groups rely upon the actions of persons to sustain their existence, but to what extent is the agency of the group depend upon the persons themselves? That is to say, to what extent can groups of persons be said to act in ways that cannot be descriptively reduced to the actions of the set of its members? How we understand collectives to act, and how we understand their possibilities for action, is connected to two related yet divergent sets of principles. First, our concept of collective action is dependent upon the metaphysical ideas underlying our conceptualization of groups, their capacity for reasoning, and their possibility to form intentions as reasons for action. Second, our understanding of collective action undergirds how the law treats collective behavior, how we think about individual and collective responsibility, and how models in disciplines such as economics, political science, and management theory explain and predict collective behavior. This project brings the two into conversation, and argues for the possibility that some groups, given the proper structural constraints, could have the capacity to be moral agents.

The discussion focuses on how cultural sensitivity / policies can help improve the quality of risk communication among ethnic minority groups and investigates ways to integrate this into the existing structure of the Environment Agency. This study is built on a collection of documented information from regional, national and international sources. In order to provide the necessary information to enable the author to construct arguments that support his proposal, content analysis was prepared in the following areas; risk communication, cultural sensitivity and the effects of culture on risk perception, hazard mitigation and warning response. The author is of the view that western culture, with its logical, pragmatic and quantitative scientific analysis is often weak at understanding the correlation between beliefs, human vulnerability, hazards and community perspectives (Padayachee, 2005). As a result, the study identifies that for contemporary risk communication to be successful among ethnic or minority communities, the agency staffs need to understand

The study investigated the combined effects of ownership structure, board effectiveness and managerial discretion on firm performance using agency theory as an analytical framework. Measures of performance used in the study were Return on Assets, Return on Equity and Dividend Yield. Using Pearson''s Product Moment Correlation and Logistic Regression, Step-wise regression and ANOVA to analyze data obtained from companies listed at the Nairobi Stock Exchange, the study found out that Ownership Concentration and Government Ownership have significant negative relationships with firm performance. On the other hand, Foreign Ownership, Diffuse Ownership, Corporation Ownership, and Manager Ownership were found to have significant positive relationships with firm performance. The results of this study have indicted the Board of Directors for not playing any meaningful role in corporate governance in Kenya. On the other hand, the results support the need for managers to bear more responsibility of their mismanagement and also share in the residual income of the firms they manage.

The study results were consistent with the Jensen and Meckling (1975) agency cost model and we didn't found any significant impact of efficiency on leverage. There is evidence towards non-linearity in the relationship between ownership type with capital structure and firms performance. The objective of the current research is to investigate the effect of capital structure on corporate performance using 40 Malaysian listed companies during 2001-2008. Panel data analysis is used to investigate the relations between five measures of capital structure and corporate performance. Using various measurements of corporate performance, the results of this study suggest that firm’s capital structure has a significant negative impact on the firm’s accounting performance which indicates that agency cost problem can affect Malaysian companies followed by high debt policies, consequently resulting in lower firm performance. However, results also suggest that all capital structure ratios except short-term debt ratio have significant positive influence on market performance measurements, which indicates that capital structure and firm performance depend on rising share prices that affect positively on firm’s market performance ratio. The main value of this study is the analysis of the impact of various capital structure measures on corporate performance of Malaysian companies.

In this study the researcher analyzed the determinants of capital structure choices for Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through survey methods and hypotheses are formulated from the pecking order and agency theory. The determinants of capital structure identified based on previous studies, namely, age, size, ownership, R&D and collateral are regressed against the source of finance, namely, personal saving and funds from families and friends, retained profit, total debt, short term debt, long term debt and external equity. The Multivariate regression results suggest that age, ownership, and the provision of collateral are most important determinants of the capital structure of SMEs in Mekelle city. Furthermore the sector classifications are regressed in the independent variable as dummy variables to examine the stability and variability of the regression coefficients across sectors. In order to shed further light other than the multivariate analysis, the study also employed five point likert-scales to investigate the attitudes and perception of the owner-managers of SMEs towards the source of finance.

It is also analyses the association of agency and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) young women. The study utilizes data from “Youth in India: Situation and Needs, 2006-2007”survey. Bivariate and Multivariate techniques are used to understand the differentials, and factors associated with agency and Sexual and reproductive health. The Principal Component Analysis is used to compute the agency based on three indices namely decision making, freedom of movement, and self efficacy. The multinomial logistic regression is used to understand the factor associated with sexual and reproductive health knowledge. Higher Educated and economically better off women, more exposed to mass media, living in urban area have higher agency for both married and unmarried women. Findings reveals that women having higher agency are found to have higher odds of better knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Inventing Agency addresses some of the most central and pressing concerns in criticism, theory, and philosophy today. As new metaphysics of the realia of power and independently animated objects have replaced ancient conceptualizations of substance, being, and causation, the question of the “subject”—of the capability for just such conceptual change, for acting to any effect whatsoever—has reemerged with fresh critical urgency. Writing on theories and fictions of the subject from Aristotle to Althusser and Fielding to Flaubert, the contributors to Inventing Agency explore the unprecedented productions of the subject as agent—of cognition, aesthetic experience and judgment, imagination and representation, and moral and political action—that together define the “revolution” in reflection that Kant called “the Age of Critique.” Informed by expertise in such interrelated fields as continental and analytic philosophy and literary history, Marxian and utopian theory, poetics and cultural criticism, moral theory and theory of sensibility, and feminist and disability studies, Inventing Agency addresses the invention of subjecthood by philosophical and literary conceptions of the specifically human capacities that continue to reveal the prospect of social—individual and historical—agency in action. The study aims to bridge the gap in literature by establishing the connection between corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost. It also examines the moderating role of agency cost on the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and firm performance, to validate whether in the presence of agency cost the corporate entrepreneurship yields high profit or not. Beginning with theoretical background of corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost, this study proposes a model to test, empirically, the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost. The findings highlight the significant negative relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and agency cost, while no moderating impact of agency cost has been found on the link between corporate entrepreneurship and firm performance. It also presents that the impact of corporate entrepreneurship is more negatively significant on agency cost reflecting that corporate entrepreneurship can act as an excellent technique in reducing agency problems within organizations that leads to high performance.

To seek answers to these questions, eight explanatory variables were regressed against dependent variables Total Debt Ratio, Long-Term Debt Ratio and Short-Term Debt Ratio. The results show that Tangibility, Firm Growth, Age of the Firm, Firm Size, Earnings Volatility and Non Debt Tax Shields variables are the significant determinants of capital structure of Ethiopian manufacturing firms in at least one out of the three models for capital structure employed in the study. In addition, many convincing evidences are in favor of Information Asymmetry and Agency Cost Theories, though there are little evidences backing Trade-off Theory. Moreover, this paper highlights the major problems by limiting itself to manufacturing sector of economy.

The financial crisis has made evident the importance of financial flexibility. Availability of funds can be a worry in the constrained debt enviroment but financial flexibility is more than that. It impacts firm's capital structure. It is related to the agency theory. It enhances company's value. It interacts with growth opportunities, investment decisions, and real options. This book investigates the linkage between corporate financing and investment activities. Based on a sample of 102 public companies traded on the Warsaw Stock Exchange several questions are answered: Does leverage refrain growth? Does cash accumulation procede investment? Does long-term debt lead to underinvestment? The book also attempts to tie research on capital structure, cash holdings, investment and the recent literature on financial flexibility. It provides a broad review of theories and empirical studies related to the topic of financial flexibility.

What is tradition? Does it have a role in the performance of Western art music? Do musical recordings speak of tradition? And how can we use them to trace stylistic transmission and change in different cultural-historical contexts of performance? These are the main questions that concern this book. Using Grieg’s piano music as a case study, the author examines how tradition affords agency and how performers actively reinterpret the musical past. By employing a range of empirical methods, including both quantitative and qualitative analytical approaches, this book investigates the tension between tradition as objective reality and tradition as subjective experience. Viewed through the limits of empiricism, tradition emerges as a social context where human agents and material culture interact to sustain a fluid dialogue between the present and the past. In its epistemological impulse this book pursues research on musical performance at the intersection of science and art.

Gender and Agency: Reconfiguring the Subject in Feminist and Social Theory

This book reassesses theories of agency and gender identity against the backdrop of changing relations between men and women in contemporary societies. McNay argues that recent thought on the formation of the modern subject offers a one–sided or negative account of agency, which underplays the creative dimension present in the responses of individuals to changing social relations. An understanding of this creative element is central to a theory of autonomous agency, and also to an explanation of the ways in which women and men negotiate changes within gender relations. In exploring the implications of this idea of agency for a theory of gender identity, McNay brings together the work of leading feminist theorists – such as Judith Butler and Nancy Fraser – with the work of key continental social theorists. In particular, she examines the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Paul Ricoeur and Cornelius Castoriadis, each of whom has explored different aspects of the idea of the creativity of action. McNay argues that their thought has interesting implications for feminist ideas of gender, but these have been relatively neglected partly because of the huge influence of the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Lacan in this area. She argues that, despite its suggestive nature, feminist theory must move away from the ideas of Foucault and Lacan if a more substantive account of agency is to be introduced into ideas of gender identity. This book will appeal to students and scholars in the areas of social theory, gender studies and feminist theory.

The emphasis therefore is to analyze the notion of human development with the intention of improving it by placing more emphasis on the aspect of politics and human agency (the ability to act and be an agent of one‘s life). Politics here is understood beyond its usual institutional focus or identification with government, politicians and parliaments to include a much wider and much more important and dynamic range of activities found in all human groups such as institutions and societies.

Consumer Agency in a Convergent Media Economy

Technology has brought about the convergence of media and telecommunications causing two distinct developments - consolidation of media organizations, and at the same time, the empowerment of end consumers. Thus, riding the wave of disruptive technologies, a new global economy is shaping up where end consumers are actively participating in the transformative process, leading media firms to devise unconventional business strategies to face newer market forces. Consumer Agency has then completely altered the media economy value chain, and is a major impacting factor in the way the media industry is conducting its business today. Designed to explore the emerging dynamics between the media industry and media consumers, this study finds that while consolidation is a market imperative and advantageous to the businesses involved, it does not lessen consumer agency, which rides independent of market forces. Conclusions on how consumer agency is impacting media economics, and the emerging profile of the new media consumer can benefit media organizations in drawing out future business strategy; and help consumer advocacy groups in understanding media industry motives.

The relationship between people who take part in the process and the different driving forces that shape the progression of territoriality shifts according to the sway these forces exert, whether it is the impact of war, the influence of a foreign population, or control by the central state. The connection between the state and homesteaders is at the center of the main research inquiry. The state has dealt variously with populations in this territory via contrasting measures, from plain neglect to the use of outright force. In turn, settlers have negotiated their relationship with the state either by avoiding it or looking up to it, through “versatile” strategies of agency, as needed. A model of evolving land use and land possession types shows the particular ways human agency consolidates territoriality. Results from this investigation shed light on issues of current concern to the social sciences, namely, the occupation of frontier regions, state-civil society relationships, and land issues.

Distributed Agency presents an interdisciplinary inroad into the latest thinking about the distributed nature of agency: what it's like, what are its conditions of possibility, and what are its consequences. The book's 25 chapters are written by a wide range of scholars, from anthropology, biology, cognitive science, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, geography, law, economics, and sociology. While each chapter takes up different materials using different methods, they all chart relations between the key elements of agency: intentionality, causality, flexibility and accountability.

Agency Problem in Non-Profit Corporations

The identification of the corporate interest represents a very fundamental step to define directors’ responsibilities and to facilitate the judicial enforcement of their duties. In order to pursue this goal, contractual and institutional theories have been developed through structural and functional approaches. While these theories have been set to study business corporations, this monographic work is meant to apply them to the non-profit corporation context. The analysis, which is conducted through the comparative law method – with particular attention to the UK, US and Italian system – aims at underscoring that the marketization of the third sector is regrettably threatening the accomplishment of the social, ethic and moral values that non-profit organizations have historically pursued.

The book explores one of the most critical concepts in gender theories. It attempts to understand the ''agency'' of the diasporic subjects. It locates agency in the personal narratives of two generations of Bangladeshi immigrant women in the United Kingdom (UK). The author problematizes the liberal notion of autonomy which considers religion as an obstacle to women''s agency. She uncouples agency from resistance, choice and the provision of change without nullifying the latter concepts within agency. The book defines agency as the ‘strategies'' that women use to lead their lives in different ways. One of the central arguments of this book is that there is none without agency, nor is someone with more agency or with less agency. Everyone has agency, but everyone has different forms of agency. This is an important book for the academics, gender specialists, development practitioners and policymakers who are interested in ''gender and migration'' issues.

Published at a time when the US government's public diplomacy has been in crisis, this book provides an exhaustive account of how it used to be done. The United States Information Agency was created, in 1953, to "tell America's story to the world" and, by engaging with the world through international information, broadcasting, culture, and exchange programs, became an essential element of American foreign policy during the Cold War. Based on newly declassified archives and more than 100 interviews with veterans of public diplomacy, from the Truman administration to the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nicholas J.Cull relates both the achievements and the endemic flaws of American public diplomacy in this period. Major topics include the process by which the Truman and Eisenhower administrations built a massive overseas propaganda operation; the struggle of the Voice of America to base its output on journalistic truth; the challenge of presenting civil rights, the Vietnam War, and Watergate to the world; and the climactic confrontation with the Soviet Union in the 1980s. This study offers remarkable and new insights into the Cold War era.
