Space, the City and Social Theory

Space, the City and Social Theory offers a clear and critical account of key approaches to cities and urban space within social theory and analysis. It explores the relation of the social and the spatial in the context of critical urban themes: community and anonymity; social difference and spatial divisions; politics and public space; gentrification and urban renewal; gender and sexuality; subjectivity and space; experience and everyday practice in the city. The text adopts an international and interdisciplinary approach, drawing on a range of debates on cities and urban life. It brings together classic perspectives in urban sociology and social theory with the analysis of contemporary urban problems and issues. Rather than viewing the urban simply as a backdrop for more general social processes, the discussion looks at how social and spatial relations shape different versions of the city: as a place of social interaction and of solitude; as a site of difference and segregation; as a space of politics and power; as a landscape of economic and cultural distinction; as a realm of everyday experience and freedom. Similarly, it examines how core social categories – such as class, culture, gender, sexuality and community – are shaped and reproduced in urban contexts. Linking debates in urban studies to wider concerns within social theory and analysis, this accessible text will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students in urban sociology, social and cultural geography, urban and cultural studies.

The transformation of space from low-rise to high-rise has had a tremendous impact on the form and structure of today’s Dhaka city, Bangladesh. This high-rise urban dwelling style has ushered in a new socio-cultural era in Dhaka. This scenario is not compatible with our traditional culture; rather it ignores our social values. The focus of the study is to analyze the spatial organization of the community space of high-rise apartment buildings in relation to the high-rise community-based organizations that are responsible for managing, maintaining and keeping the social harmony through various active performances. With these assumptions, the study develops a conceptual framework based on relevant theories and concepts and aims to analyze thereby the socio-spatial context and evaluate the findings regarding the issue of social sustainability. There have been two case studies on two high-rise apartment buildings in Dhaka city. The study shows how quality community space and active social organization can maintain and promote social sustainability within high-rise apartment buildings in Dhaka city of Bangladesh.

The Ogbere case study presents how marginalised and excluded low income people negotiate housing production from a social context of lack of access. This necessitated studying the housing producers, the processes adopted and the houses produced. The family and residential history of the people and informal occupation contributed immensely to their ability to produce houses. Lefebvres theory of space provided insights into the methodology to apprehend low income housing production. The producers who were not new entrants to Ibadan city were highly motivated to own houses rather than rent and higher reasons than making profit from investment for home-ownership.They operated at the margin of representational space and space of representations in abstract space to achieve the unexpected-houses for themselves. The motivation of the Ogbere spatial practitioners were experiential from earlier lived space and everyday life from which they derived substantial indigenous knowledge and social capital that made housing production possible.

Social and Spatial Production of Ankara

This work aims to analyse the social production of urban space and it is based on Lefebvre’s conceptualisation of ‘production of space’ within the context of Marxist urban space theories. In the analysis of space, historical geographical materialism and realist geography are used. In this work, the production of urban space of Ankara is examined with an emphasis on social relations of planning and architecture. Ankara as the capital city is a spatial representation of nation state and national identity. Spatial representations and practices are analysed in terms of Ataturk Boulevard and the squares of Ulus, S?hh?ye and K?z?lay. Within this scope, public buildings and monuments, housing, transportation and commercial spaces are examined by drawing on Lefebvre’s conceptual triad of ‘spatial practices’, ‘representations of space’ and ‘spaces of representation’. In the production process of the urban space of Ankara, history of space is considered as the history of its forms and representations and the production of urban space is examined in historical periods.

This revised edition of Patrick Baert?s widely acclaimed Social Theory in the Twentieth Century, now benefitting from the collaboration of Filipe Carreira da Silva has been brought right up–to–date with cutting–edge developments in social theory today. It offers an easy–to–read but provocative account of the development of social theory, covering a range of key figures and classic schools of thought. The authors bridge the gap between philosophy and social theory, locating the theoretical views of individuals such as Michel Foucault, Anthony Giddens and Jurgen Habermas within wider historical traditions. The revised edition includes new material on actor–network theory, French pragmatist sociology and cultural sociology, and discusses contemporary social thinker such as Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Manuel Castells, Randall Collins, Michael Mann, Saskia Sassen and Theda Skocpol. The authors conclude with a bold, new pragmatist agenda for social theory and the social sciences. Written in a lively style, and avoiding jargon, Social Theory in the Twentieth Century and Beyond is aimed at students who wish to gain an understanding of the main debates and dilemmas driving social theory. Like its predecessor, it will be a standard introduction to modern social theory for students in sociology, politics and anthropology.

Even before wartime incarceration, Japanese Americans largely lived in separate cultural communities from their West Coast neighbors. Although the Nisei children, the American-born second generation, were U.S. citizens and were integrated in public schools, they were socially isolated in many ways from their peers. These young women found rapport in ethnocultural youth organizations, a forgotten world of female friendship and camaraderie that Valerie J. Matsumoto recovers in this book. Through extensive networks of social clubs, young Japanese American women competed in sports, socialized with young men, and forged enduring friendships. During the 1920s and 1930s, Nisei girls' organizations flourished in Los Angeles, then home to the largest Japanese American population. In clubs with names such as the Junior Misses and Tartanettes, girls gained leadership training, took part in community service, found jobs, and enjoyed beach outings and parties. Often sponsored by the YWCA, Buddhist temples, and Christian churches, these groups served as a bulwark against racial discrimination, offering a welcoming space that helped young women navigate between parental expectations and the lure of popular culture. Indeed, their dances, meetings, and athletic events filled the social calendars in the ethnic press. As cultural mediators and ethnic representatives, these urban teenagers bridged the cultures of the Japanese American community and mainstream society, whether introducing new foods, holidays, and rituals into the home or dancing in kimono at civic events. Some expressed themselves as poets, writers, and journalists and took leading roles in the development of a Nisei literary network. Women's organizing skills and work would prove critical to the support of their families during World War II incarceration and community rebuilding in the difficult years of resettlement. By bringing to life a dynamic and long-lasting world of friendship circles and clubs, City Girls highlights the ways in which urban Nisei daughters claimed modern femininity, an American identity, and public space from the Jazz Age through the postwar era.

Talk and Social Theory is an inportant contribution to our understanding of everyday talk and its relation to broader social processes. Talk is unique and locally produced, crafted by particular social actors for the specific situation of its use. Yet the conduct of such talk is profoundly influenced by, and influential upon, social and cultural processes that occur beyond the temporal and spatial horizon of the occasion of the talk itself. Drawing on and criticizing social theory, Erickson explores the mutually reinforcing connections between the local conduct of talk and the general working of society, economy, and history. The use of everyday examples enhances the appeal of Talk and Social Theory to a non–specialist as well as a specialist audience. Written in a clear and comprehensible way, it reviews key theoretical prospectives and conceptual frameworks in social theory and in the sociolinguistic study of talk. It concludes with an argument against overly determinist accounts of talk as social action, in the interest of better construction of social theory and better empirical study of talk. This book will be an essential text for students of sociolinguistics and the analysis of discourse in conversation. It will also be of interest to students in sociology, anthropology, social theory, education, linguistics, applied linguistics, and anyone concerned with the nature and uses of language in social interaction.

Social theory can sometimes seem as though it's speaking of a world that existed long ago, so why should we continue to study and discuss the theories of these dead white men? Can their work still inform us about the way we live today? Are they still relevant to our consumer-focused, celebrity-crazy, tattoo-friendly world? This book explains how the ideas of classical sociological theory can be understood, and applied to, everyday activities like listening to hip-hop, reading fashion magazines or watching reality TV. Taking the reader through central sociological texts, Social Theory In Popular Culture explains why key theorists – from Marx to Saussure – are still considered to be the bedrock of sociology and sociological enquiry. Each chapter examines a different key thinker and applies their work to a recognisable aspect of popular cultural, showing how the central issues underpinning classic social thought - class, conflict, gender, power, ethnicity, and social status - can still be readily observed within the modern global world.Encouraging the reader to critique and reflect upon the ways in which classic social theory applies to their own worlds, this is the perfect antidote to dry social theory explanations. It is an eye-opening read for all students and scholars across the social sciences.

The deterioration in the living standards of the worst–off members of all kinds of societies has coincided with the resurgence of free–market utopianism as a political creed. Yet there is as yet no convincing theory to link these two phenomena. Bill Jordan seeks to fill this gap in social scientific theory by explaining poverty and social exclusion in terms of collective action in exclusive groups. The book draws on public choice theory for its analysis of collective action of all kinds, from households and clubs to communities and polities, and shows how the strategies of individuals and groups affect collective outcomes. Although the methods are primarily derived from this economic perspective, historical and comparative dimensions are extensively reviewed, with special reference to the feminization of poverty, and the racialization of social exclusion.Bill Jordan draws on his wide knowledge of comparative social policy to criticize currently fashionable theories of community and social citizenship. He argues that economic globalization and the actions of comfortable majorities in all the First World countries have increased the vulnerability of the poor, who in turn have taken strategic resistance action that drives up social costs. His theory includes an analysis of the threat to democracy posed by growing antagonisms between exclusive groups.A Theory of Poverty and Social Exclusion is a pathbreaking book which will be of marked interest to academics and students in sociology, social policy, politics and economics.

This book traces a unique story of social theory: one which focuses on its role in offering ideas for alternative societies. In charting this story, Matt Dawson argues that the differences in alternatives offered by social theorists not only demonstrate the diversity in, and value of, sociological perspectives, but also emphasize competing ideas of the role of intellectuals in social change. The text discusses a collection of social theorists –from key figures such as Marx, Durkheim and Du Bois to less well known or now commonly overlooked writers such as Levitas, Lefebvre and Mannheim. It explains their use of the tools of sociology to critique society and provide visions for alternatives, highlighting elements of the intellectual backgrounds of movements such as socialism, anti-racism, feminism and cosmopolitanism. Social Theory for Alternative Societies not only explores in detail a variety of thinkers, but also reflects on the relevance of sociology today and on the connection between social theory and the 'real world.' Thus it will be of interest to students of sociology and those interested in ideas for a better society.

The Social Theory of Anthony Giddens and Environmentalism

4733 руб.
This book contends that environmentalism lacks a realistic view of social change and that an increased engagement with social theory is a key way forward to the goal of sustainability. Anthony Giddens is a social theorist of world renown but his work has not received a great deal of attention from within environmentalism. This book argues that Giddens’ work is a rich vein for environmentalism as he provides a social theory – structuration theory – rich in concepts for understanding society, a valuable description of modernity in his later works and outlines policy ideas that are highly fruitful. This book reconstructs Giddens flawed understanding of nature as a “created environment” to theorize nature as existing in modernity. When the concept of contradiction from structuration theory is connected to Giddens’ work on modernity with nature integrated, an understanding of modernity as composed of two dialectics – local-global and part of-apart from nature – is revealed. These dialectics are the sites at which the outline agenda for policy development must be aimed and this book will suggest such an agenda aimed at navigating these dialectics for social change towards sustainability.

This work presents the spatial transformations on the waterfront of Durres, a port city in Albania, within a predefined timeframe:before, during and after socialism. The main concern of the research is the examination of the impact of political, social and economic actors, as well as morphological and geographic conditions in transforming the urban space and environment. The aim of the study is to understand how space was (re)produced, used and transformed in three different and consecutive systems and the relations set among actors involved in these process. While making a descriptive and comparative spatial analysis, the physical & programmatic elements of the waterfront constitute essential tools of examination. Along with the information on space production process inherent of three political systems, concentrating the attention on the waterfront as an important element of the urban structure; this work brings some understanding on subjects related to the actual spatial transformations occurring in the city and it social space. Finally, by affirming the waterfront as an edge condition, the notion of ‘edge’ and its meaning in the socialist and post-socialist city is elaborated.

Wendt argues that states can view each other as enemies, rivals or friends, characterising these roles as 'cultures of anarchy', which are shared ideas which help shape states' interests and capabilities. These cultures can change over time as ideas change. Wendt thus argues that the nature of international politics is not fixed, and that the international system is not condemned to conflict and war.

From the everyday and unnoticed to the newsworthy and cutting edge, technology is undoubtedly a fundamental element of our daily lives. While saving us time and effort, it can also shape our environment, mediate our relationships, and simultaneously solve problems and create new ones. In studying technology we gain an insight into how societyis constructed, maintained and transformed. Unravelling and explaining the complex connections between technology and the social contexts in which it is used, Technology and Social Theory guides the reader through 150 years of thinking in this ever evolving field. The chapters critically evaluate a broad range of theorists, from Marx to Foucault, Orwell to Elias, alongside empirical examples which show theory in action. The significance of technology is assessed within both public spheres and intimate spaces, shedding light on its integralrole in society. Showing how theory maps the way for further research, and in turn how new advances in research can inform theory, this book is invaluable reading for students and researchers in Sociology, Social theory, Science and Technology Studies and the Media.

The Pattern and Process of Urban Social Exclusion in Istanbul

4468 руб.
This book investigates the radical changes in urban policy which has taken place in Turkey since the year 2000. The main argument of the book is to examine whether the recent urban regeneration projects in Istanbul, targeting gecekondu settlements, historical and dilapidated areas in the city centre, will lead social exclusion of the dwellers or not. These are theorised in terms of changes in the relationship between state, space and society. The approach of the book understands space (territory, distance, scale), not as given, but as an active part of social relations of their construction. This premise carries changes in urban policy, empowering of central state institutions and the resistance of the dwellers of urban regeneration areas as a whole process.

Humanity at large has arrived at a critical point in its destiny. The consensus of stupidity has reached its zenith in our time to a grandiose proportion in all fields of human praxis. To be or not to be is not anymore an issue for contemporary human person as s/he has lost touch with the wonderful possibilities. The issue at hand for contemporary self is how to get by and ask for what''s next. In other words, our system of societal organization has turned so alienated from lofty concepts of good, beauty, just and truth that realities explained by Jung or Maslow such as individuation or Peak- Experiences seem so foreign and inaccessible to us because we have become so deeply accustomed to inauthentic lifestyles which are devoid of ultimate realities. I believe that sociology is a kind of theology with a democratic orientation. While theology is focused on what God envisions about the destiny of humanity, sociology, on the other hand, it is the reasoning of human being on what the destiny could provide for her/him in a world that is really unknown and unbeknown to this thrown-away Dasein.

A THEORY OF THE COLLECTIVE SOCIAL ORGANISM

This book seeks to argue that a collection of interacting organic agents behaves as if it were a separate entity in its own right. This result, although not new, will be cast in terms of a novel model that expands the usual formulations of the production constraint. This allows us to model a more general notion of an agent and thus the general equilibrium of a system. The book will take advantage of an algebraic structure that is implicit in systems of exchange and transactions -- of information in general, and goods and services in particular. This will allow us to apply standard tools of analysis to the problem of choice for both producing and consuming agents, within the context of the algebra. The result is a partitioning of economic activity into easily derived closed form expressions. Of importance is the general equilibrium of the unit social organism. This organism, by behaving optimally and interacting with its environment, gives rise to a general equilibrium setting, which apply both to the micro unit and the macro system as a whole. The theoretical implications lead to iso-curve fields for both the micro and macro system analyzed.

The importance of a critical understanding of space in contemporary social scientific enquiry is increasingly recognised as fundamental for the analysis of the development, enlargement and experience of modern capitalism. In particular, the concentration of forces and relations of production, circulation and consumption, of people, commodities and services, is progressively appreciated as achieved through the creation and exploitation of urban space. The works of Lefebvre, Harvey, Foucault, de Certeau and Simmel are used to create a syncretic theoretical analyses that provides a conceptual framework for the substantive analysis of a case study of specific forms of modern urban social space. That is, an exploration of the processes by which the origins and development of what came to be integral features of the landscape of the modern city were produced, namely, the creation of the social spaces of public parks. The investigation of Glasgow's parks as social spaces constructed, depicted and used for leisure and recreation contributes to the understanding of the development and experience of urban modernity, as well as to contemporary socio-spatial analysis.

A Journey to the Stars

The theoretical method of “A Journey to the Stars” is treated in this book. The distance to a stellar system is too huge, therefore the travel to the fixed star nearest to the Earth using the present propulsion technology will require tens of thousands years. In order to overcome such a limit of the space travel between fixed stars, research and development of a new propulsion theory and navigation theory are indispensable. As a promising approach, space drive propulsion theory and Hyper-Space navigation theory given by a space-time featuring an imaginary time (i.e., Time-Hole) are introduced. Space drive propulsion system is one of field propulsion system utilizing the action of the medium of strained or deformed field of space. The curvature of space plays a significant role for the propulsion theory. On the other hand, a plunging into Hyper-Space characterized by imaginary time would make the interstellar travel possible in a short time. The Hyper-Space navigation theory would allow a starship to start at any time and from any place for an interstellar travel to the farthest star systems, the whole mission time being within human lifetime.

The Meaning of Lost Space Concept For People In Urban Spaces

Public spaces reflect the social life and interaction of people When this social interaction is missed in a public space it means the public space is lost. Lost space is a production of urban space left by people if it continues, we will lose the place. In the lost space we just have an unusable land in the urban environment whereas, when we lost a place not only people’s memories and imagined being forgotten from a space but also the identity to be lost and the characteristic of the city and citizenship will decline sharply. The perceptions of the environment due to differences in humans and some special factors in their way of life are not the same so the meaning of lost space between residents and passersby is different. The variables of space, which associate the meaning of lost space for people, were not identified;so there is a big gap in designing lost spaces to bringing back to the people and life cycle. This study has concentrated on the lost space to identify the variables of it which convey the meaning of lost space to people, also comparing the perception of residents and passersby of a lost space in the urban environment to extract the perceptual factors of lost space.

Correlations, Stabilities and Black Holes in String Theory and M-Theory

The present research offers thermodynamic geometric properties of black holes in string theory and M-theory. It systematically investigates the state-space and conformally related chemical geometries for extremal and non-extremal black holes, black strings, black rings and supertubes in four and higher spacetime dimensions. From the perspective of the intrinsic differential geometry, the questions of stability, regularity, existence of critical phenomena and phase transitions have been analyzed for charged anticharged black holes in a given basin of attractor. For the two parameter half BPS giants and superstars, an ensemble of arbitrary liquid droplets or irregular shaped fuzzballs shows that the chemical correlations involve ordinary summations, while the state-space correlations are depicted by standard polygamma functions. The state-space geometry provides definite stability character to black brane configurations under both the Planck length corrections and higher derivative stringy corrections. Perspective research includes D-branes, attractor mechanism, topological trees, Calabi-Yau compactifications, moduli space geometry and algebraic geometry.
