Bio-diesel is a renewable diesel fuel substitute that can be made by chemically combining any natural oil or fat with an alcohol. Most European bio-diesel is made from edible oil. In India the above situation does not hold valid because of large scale demand of edible oils for food purposes so non- edible oils are used. Based on the features of the oils form the non edible plants, we have short listed, Jatropha carcus and Pongamia pinnata for further exploitation and extensive studies. The two virgin oils can be used directly in light service CI engine, For application in HSD engines the two oils need modifications so that specifications become closer to that of average HSD. Literature scan of technological aspects of biodiesels show the following gaps in knowledge which calls for further investigations to strengthen this technology. A) Comparative studies of preparation of bio-diesel and detailed characterization. B) Limited studies on blends involving ME of JC & PP with Euro-III & Euro-IV HSD and their characterization. Biodiesel was synthesized from vegetable oils by base-catalyzed transesterification with methanol in the presence of NaOH. The optimization of experimental parameters was established to achieve the maximum yield of product. The physical and fuel properties of biodiesel like dynamic viscosity, kinematic viscosity, acid number, density, flash point, cetane number, cloud point and pour point were determined and found comparable to ASTM standards. Prepared biodiesel was chemically characterized by FT-IR, NMR (1H & 13C) and GC-MS to elucidate the identification, quantification and chemical composition. The synthesis of biodiesel was confirmed by comparison of FT-IR and NMR (1H & 13C) analysis of oil and biodiesel. GC-MS analyses identified the chemical compositions of FAMEs in biodiesel and were verified by retention time data and mass fragmentation pattern.

Vector borne viral diseases of vegetable crops are regarded as major limiting factor for crop production throughout the world. Ecological problems created by chemical pesticides for insect vectors and their relevance to human health are receiving serious attention. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are gaining importance and are considered most versatile biocontrol agents for the pest management for its wide host range and natural epizootics. The present study was focused on isolation of entomopathogenic fungi from insect cadavers, their characterization, testing of efficacy against different insect pests, their compatibility with chemical pesticides and their molecular characterization.Five different species were isolated from insect pests of vegetable ecosystem. We standardized their effective dose against Aphis crrassivora and Odontotermes obessus. Compatibility of twelve agrochemicals at lethal and sub lethal dose was tested with an aim to reduce the pesticides use and to get the synergistic effect of EPF and pesticides.This work will be helpful for Scientific community, Research Scholars, Students working on biocontrol of insect pests.

New stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography had been prepared by the reaction of congo red solution with amberlite anion exchange. The F.T.I.R elemental analyses have configured the attachment of congo red on the resin as has indicated by the physical appearance of the new resin. The resin capacities of newly prepared resin has calculated the resin capacity for the amberlite-congo red resin was found to average 4.8 meq/ gm and for the amberlite resin 3.0 meq./gm. The new stationary phase has been packed into stainless steel column. This has been done by the special teqnique. The chromatographic performance of the packed column was characterized the number of plate numbers, height equivalent of a theoretical plates, capacity factors, selectivity factor and peak asymmetry were measured by analyzing different analysis on the new column using different mobile phases composition and flow rates. The parameters were measured from analasisi of some amino acids such as histidine, phenyl alanine, tyrosine and prolenene. The analysis of amino acids using amberlite-congo red column has performed with an aqueous mobile phase adjusted at pH 2.5.

The second target is to study the effect of jojoba oil and its derivatives as additives for biopolymers in order to improve its poor mechanical properties and poor antibacterial capacity. Further improvement could be achieved by mixing the jojoba oil or its derivatives with other additives like chitosan nanoparticles, which can lead to better oil dispersion in the polymer matrix. Sonocatalytic process was adopted to enhance the decolorization and mineralization of wastewater containing amaranth dye. Zeolite Y was used as the support material and modified using three different active metals i.e. Ti, La and Fe.The modification of the encapsulated TiO2 by Fe metal enhanced the decolorization efficiency of amaranth dye more efficiently than its modification with La metal. The maximum decolorization efficiency was about 97 % with maximum COD removal of 57 % after 120 min of reaction. The catalytic reaction was assisted by an ultrasonic irradiation source at 50 W for the output power and the frequency was 40 kHz. Different operational parameters were investigated for the best of higher catalytic activity.The developed sonocatalysts were successfully characterized using different characterization techniques.The Fe ions loaded onto encapsulated titanium caused a significant reduction in band gap energy from 3.55 eV for bare TiO2 to 2.8 for Fe loaded on encapsulated (0.8%Fe/Ti-NaY). The synthesized sonocatalyst possessed high surface areas and demonstrated high reusability potential for many consecutive cycles with acceptable amount of Fe leaching.

This study is based on geochemical analysis and interpretation of a potential source rock, Chia Gara Formation (Tithonian-Berriassian), and five hydrocarbon oil samples from the different sections and wells. The oils are from two oil fields; Kirkuk oil field (K-252, K-265, K-215, and K-392) and Jambur oil field (Ja-15). Bulk geochemical data involve C/N/S-elemental data and Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses. Following extraction and MPLC fractionation, the aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon fractions were investigated by GC/MS. The Rock-Eval pyrolysis results, which carried out on the selected samples, gave different types of kerogen and different maturity stages. As a whole, the Chia Gara Formation from all wells has type II and III kerogens in mature stage in wells K-109 and Tk-3 totally, but in well Bj-1 it is partially mature and in well Hr-1 only the upper part is in early stage maturity. High levels and similar distribution patterns of organic sulfur compounds in Chia Gara source rock bitumens and reservoired oils most clearly document the genetic relationship. Aliphatic and aromatic biomarkers support an origin of Cretaceous reservoired oils from the Chia Gara Formation.

The objective of the current study was to investigate the effect of different blended vegetable oils having different levels and profiles of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on hypercholesterolemia by analyzing the changes of lipid profile in high cholesterol diet fed rats. Rats fed blended oils showed significantly lower levels of total cholesterol (TC), total triacylglycerol (TG) and total low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol as well as higher levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in comparison with animals fed HCD and cholesterol free diet (CFD). Thus, oil blends under study may be useful formulations for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. In addition to improving the lipid profile by lowering TC, TG and LDL and increasing HDL, blending of vegetable oils can result in an economic advantage of lower prices.

Leflunomide is a drug with limited water solubility. It exhibits four polymorphic forms I,II,III,IV. In the present study, form II polymorph was formulated using form I. Form II polymorph readily dissolves in water than does form I. The crystals of form I and II polymorph were characterized by IR, DSC, XRPD. Comparison of solubility of form I and form II was done by UV Spectrophotometer. There was a significant increase in solubility of form II. Aqueous film-coated tablets of form I and form II were prepared using the same processing parameters and compared for the rate of dissolution. Form II tablets showed a significant improvement in terms of dissolution rate, drug release and solubility.

J. phoenicea L., family Cupressaceae, a small monoecious or dioecious Mediterranean tree, is found in mainly scattered populations in littoral sites. The species present a very large geographical distribution ranging from Portugal to Saudi Arabia. It’s also native to North Africa (Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia) as well as the Canary Islands. In fact, many authors have reported the presence of intraspecific taxa based upon morphological, biochemical and molecular data. J. phoenicea is considered as an important medicinal plant, largely used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes, diarrhea, rheumatism, as an oral hypoglycemic agent, and as a diuretic. Considering the medicinal interest of the species, several studies related to the chemical characterization of its essential oil were performed. The findings of this study will paved way for the preparation of vaccine from the field strain that would be used for effective eradication of this devastating disease from the goat population.

The present work helped to confirm the disease after feeding of the contaminated groundnut hay. The fungi isolated were Rhizopus oryzae, Fusarium sporotrichoides and Fusarium semitectum. Macroscopic, microscopic and molecular characterization of the fungi were done for confirmation. The fungi contaminated wheat materials were subjected to mycotoxins analysis using LC-MS/MS method. Fusarium sporotrichoides infected material had had apicidin 28.80 µg/kg and beauvericin 5126.67 µg/kg.Fusarium semitectum infected material was having apicidin 5375 µg/kg and beauvericin 2732.50 µg/kg of infected material. Sub chronic toxicity study of culture filtrates and fungi infected wheat materials were conducted in rats. The fungi were isolated from the contaminated groundnut hay which caused mycotoxicosis in cattle, exhibited the clinical signs of colic, tenesmus, ruminal atony, anorexia, bleeding from nostrils, rectum and fly bite site. Clinical signs observed in rats were diarrhoea, weakness, severe arching of back, swollen forehead and conjunctival haemorrhage.This study helped the farming community by identifying cause of the death of the cattle and reduced further mortality.

Molecular characterization of a terminal flower mutant phenotype of Beta palonga, isolated earlier, a leafy vegetable,was done. Micromorphological, histological and biochemical study of the normal and mutant phenotype reveals physiognomic similarity of the mutant phenotype with terminal flower mutant of Arabidopsis and Antirrhinum. To investigate the regulation of meristem identity and control of flower development of the mutant phenotype, degenerated primers were designed from the highly conserved region of floral identity gene TFL1/CEN. This resulted in a 238 base pair-specific amplified cDNA product by RT–PCR, named as PTC-1. Sequence analysis followed by BLAST showed high homology of the PTC with TFL1/CEN like gene, indicating the presence of TFL1/CEN homologue in B. palonga. Southern analysis indicates alteration of the genomic sequence of the mutant of B. palonga. The significance of the terminal flower is also discussed.

LPP emissions from some metal oxide targets were studied with reference to corresponding metal targets of pure quality. Emissions in the visible region were used for the spectroscopic procedures of LPP characterization. Spectroscopic investigations were also done to study the behaviour of expanding LPP under the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Photo-ablated target materials generated an electrical signal, which served as a probe signal alternative to track the charge states in plasma and for the different diagnostic aspects. Possibilities for a Tomographic Imaging of LPP were studied using Pixel Method. Digital Holographic Interferometry (DHI) and Angular Spectrum Propagation (ASP) were used to retrieve the phase distribution in LPP. The phase maps were reduced to chord integrated densities and radial electron density profiles were mapped, by an Abel inversion method.

The object of this study is antioxudant potential of different cold pressed and refined edible oils by application of different antioxidant assays. Antioxidant potential for particular cold pressed oil depends of the origin of seeds or plant from which the oil is obtained and the way on which the oil is extracted. For examination of the radical scavenger potential of the most consumable edible oils: DPPH assay, TEAC assay, HAPX assay and ?-carotene assay were applied. Cold pressed sunflower oil obtained by cold-pressing of high quality sunflower seeds contain significant level of vitamin-E-active compounds, especially ?-tocopherol. Since ?-tocopherol is oil soluble vitamin-E-active compound, DPPH assay was the most suitable for determination of antioxidant potential of this oil. ?-carotene assay is the best antioxidant assays for vegetable oils which consist significant amount of carotenes and licopenes.

The amino acids of ASL and GCL detected presently were compared with the amino acids of other algal lectins reported earlier, presence of cystine in marine algal lectins has been found out for the first time in India.

Better performance was found in germplasm No. 20 in respect of total fruit weight, weight of seed and skin thickness of fruits. The total soluble solids found higher in germplasm No. 20 (12.23 %) and titratable acidity in germplasm No. 16 (49.33 %). Vitamin C and carotenoids found maximum in germplasm No. 20 (442.70 mg/100g) and No. 20 (15.92 mg/100g) of fruit pulp. Germplasm No. 4 and 12 was better in respect of anthocyanin (0.10 mg/100gm) and flavonoids (0.19 gm) content of fruit pulp. Considering desired fruit characteristics germplasam No. 20 (pummelo) was found better. Citrus fruits squash was successfully prepared by using 60 g sugar containing treatment consisting 50-80 g of sugar with 10 g variation of sugar in three treatments without changing other ingredient. Jelly was successfully prepared by using 300 g sugar containing treatment consisting 250-350 g of sugar with 50 g variation of sugar in three treatments without changing other ingredient. Jarok was successfully prepared by using 55 g salt containing treatment consisting 50-60 g of salt with 5 g variation of salt in three treatments without changing other ingredient.

The prevalence and characterization of pathogenic bacteria from fish cultured in ponds fertilized with organic manures was studied. Almost the same type of bacterial species were isolated from organic manures, ponds water and organs of fish. Chicken manure supported more bacterial species as proved by its high total aerobic bacterial count than cow manure. Total aerobic bacterial count differed significantly in different organs of fish in three ponds except in case of liver. High prevalence of Aeromonas sp. was found in all systems except in chicken manure treated pond, where Pseudomonas sp. was higher in percentage. Water and organic manures were the main source of Aeromonas sp, Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. Chicken manure was source of Proteus sp. and Serratia sp. while Serratia sp. was also isolated from cow manures. Zoonotic pathogens isolated from fish are important from veterinary public health point of view and a broad spectrum research is highly called for. These bacteria cause diseases including haemorrhage, fin rot, skin necrosis, chronic lesions on caudal fin, epizootic ulcerative syndrome and septicaemia in fish.

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) is an important cucurbitaceous vegetable grown in tropics. Among the cucurbits, it is considered as a prized vegetable because of its higher nutritive value, besides immense medicinal properties. The fruits are used as tonic, purgative, stomachic carminative, anti-inflammatory,thermogenic, anti diabetic, etc. Bitter melon is currently under study as a complementary drug in the treatment of diabetes both to reduce glucose levels and oxidative stress, as an antiviral therapy for HIV infection, and as a cytostatic in certain cancers (Lee-Huang et al., 1995). The study was undertaken to elicit information on the nature of variability, correlation, path analysis and molecular characterization of bitter gourd genotypes. The outcome is both growth and yield attributing characters showed high genetic advance over per cent of mean with high heritability. Yield per plant was positively and significantly correlated with yield attributing characters. These genotypes were grouped in to two major clusters based on 143 RAPD markers.The study revealed medium to low genetic diversity in bitter gourd genotypes.

Conversion of agricultural products to bio-energy can take many forms. Among the conversion options are ethanol from cellulose and biodiesel from vegetable oils. The first paper in this dissertation focuses on the use of stover from sorghum and corn as a feedstock for cellulosic ethanol. Plant density is reviewed as a potential influence on the production of biomass. Biodiesel production can occur from multiple oil seed crops, dried distiller’s grains with solubles, and yellow grease. Increasing annual oil yield from oil seed crops will contribute to the availability of biodiesel if fuel use increase does not exceed biodiesel production potential from the oil yield increase. The second chapter attempts to increase annual oil yield by testing multiple crop combinations for oil yield. Demand for oil seed crops can influence the production of them. Separation of lipids for alternative markets will leave the remaining bulk of oils for use in biodiesel production. The third chapter displays the lipid profiles of four crops.

The incidence of dermatomycoses has risen dramatically all over the world. Athlete’s foot is common and difficult to treat and if untreated, may lead to bacterial infection of the lower leg skin (cellulites). These fungus diseases are clinically termed as the Tineas or Dermatomycoses. Ringworm infections of skin are most prominent and remain a common clinical problem despite the availability of several antimycotic drugs. These synthetic agents are non biodegradable and cause adhesive effects and residual toxicity. Therefore, keeping this fact in mind, the study have been carried out to isolate novel antifungal antibiotic producing bacteria. In the course of screening programme, a Bacillus subtilis MTCC-8114 was isolated, which showed activity against Microsporum fulvum & Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The antibiotic was characterized as peptide antifungal antibiotic and also found stable at different physiological conditions (temperature, pH, incubation period, aeration & non-aeration). The biotechnological potential of B. subtilis is noteworthy and may be used as biological control agent against pathogenic fungi or as food additive.

An attempt has been made to develop value added battered and breaded fish "cutlet" from Pangasius (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). Recently due to increased fish production in India the price of pangasius is reduced, therefore to increase profitability by developing a value added product from Pangasius (P. hypophthalmus) is urgent need for their utilization, also no attempt has been made to develop battered and breaded product "cutlet" from pangasius fish. The recipe was standardized using the recipe the cutlets were prepared and kept in refrigerated display unit (-15 to -18?C) for shelf life assessment. The product was subjected to organoleptic evaluation, biochemical and microbiological tests at 2 days intervals. During storage study, it was found that, the pangasius fish cutlet kept in refrigerated display unit (-15 to -18?C) was acceptable up to 16 days.

Human mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow (hMSC) show self-renewal capacity and multipotency. hMSC are easily isolated based on their adherence to a plastic surface. Another particular feature of hMSC is their ability to survive without serum. This study shows that, in these conditions, hMSC remain arrested at the G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle, keeping their surface markers expression, as well as their proliferative and differentiation potentials, even after prolonged periods. Based on this advantage, the signals involved in hMSC survival, migration, adhesion, proliferation and differentiation were characterized under these conditions by identifying the endogenous expression of receptors to different growth factors and by manipulating their pathways exogenously. These assays demonstrate that BMP and Wnt pathways are involved in survival. In addition, whereas Erk pathway activation promotes proliferation, migration and differentiation to osteoblasts or adipocytes, RA causes a mesenchymal to ectodermal transition (including the de novo expression of neuronal markers) that leads to a loss of these hMSC characteristics including their capacity to survive in serum-free medium.

Due to the high quantities of water used in the dyeing processes, textile industry has become one of the greatest sources of liquid effluent that contaminated with various kinds of dyes. The liquid effluent may cause serious water pollution problems and it requires solutions.However, commercially available activated carbons are still considered expensive due to the use of non-renewable and relatively expensive starting material such as bituminous coal. Therefore, this study investigates the potential use of tropical fruit wastes such as mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) peel and rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) peel that available in Malaysia, as the precursor for the preparation of activated carbon which can be applied for the removal of basic Malachite Green and reactive Remazol Brilliant Blue R dyes from aqueous solution. Optimum activated carbon preparation conditions were determined using response surface methodology. The activated carbons prepared were characterized to study their respective physical and chemical characteristics. Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics for adsorption of basic and reactive dyes were investigated by batch adsorption test.

The present study was conducted to characterize the Chitinase enzyme from Bacillus thuringiensis strains.13 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis were screened. All strains were found to have chitinolytic activity. The chitinolytic strains were screened for maximum activity at varying pH. Chitinase activity was assayed as the amount of N-acetylglucosamine released in U/ml using the DNS assay method. The maximum activity (0.229±0.001 U/ml) was shown by CMBL-Bt4 after 4 days of incubation at 37?C (pH 7.0) when medium was supplemented with 1% colloidal chitin. PCR was employed to amplify the chitinase gene from SBS-Bt1, SBS-Bt3, SBS-Bt5 and SBS-Bt6 by using a specific pair of primers. The amplified gene was then cloned into pTZ57R TA cloning vector and transferred in E.coli. The sequenced genes of SBS-Bt1, SBS-Bt3, SBS-Bt5 and SBS-Bt6 consist of 1195, 1103, 1212 and 1150 nucleotides respectively encoding 360 residues. The calculated molecular weight of SBS-Bt1, 3 and 5 was 39.47kDa while that of SBS-Bt6 was 39.39kDa and pI value of 6.95. The chi gene sequences of the studied strains shows 90% similarity with Bacillus thuringiensis serovar colmeri chiA (EF103273.1)

Ever since the rise of fuel costs, the diesel engine manufacturers throughout the world, for the past few years, have been allocating a great deal of research for the improvement of the engine thermal efficiency. Number of methods are being suggested by various experts and researchers. Among them, the Low Heat Rejection (LHR) Engine concept is at the forefront. From the day of invention of the LHR Engine, maximum thermal efficiency improvement obtained so far is very less. A solemn attempt is made in this research is to develop an Efficient LHR (E-LHR) engine to achieve higher thermal efficiency. Different levels of insulations with special lubricants are tried on the C.I. Engine to achieve the best one in terms of performance, emissions and other combustion parameters. The E-LHR Engine suggested in this work has been tested with different vegetable oils for their suitability. Theoretical investigations are also carried out to verify at which injection pressure and compression ratio, the C.I. Engine has better performance characteristics when Jatropha is used as fuel. All these investigations are useful to lead to a substantial contribution to the development of E-LHR engine.

Xylanase enzymes are group of enzymes that can degrade Xylan present in plants. Xylan lignin and cellulose formed a complex matrix in plants. Lignin imparts colour to cellulose and thus eventually imparts colour to paper and pulp. Xylanase facilitates the removal of lignin from the paper pulp thus improves the brightness of paper. Xylanase was produced by Aspergillus niger using different carbon sources. UV irradiation of Aspergillus niger slightly improves the Xylanase activity than native Aspergillus niger. Twenty minutes exposure of Aspergillus niger to UV irradiation was considered suitable for the production of Xylanase. Wheat bran with 3.5% concentration was considered best substrate for Xylanase production than corn cobs and sugarcane baggasse. Maximum Xylanase production was observed at 30oC and pH 5.6.
