Bio-diesel is a renewable diesel fuel substitute that can be made by chemically combining any natural oil or fat with an alcohol. Most European bio-diesel is made from edible oil. In India the above situation does not hold valid because of large scale demand of edible oils for food purposes so non- edible oils are used. Based on the features of the oils form the non edible plants, we have short listed, Jatropha carcus and Pongamia pinnata for further exploitation and extensive studies. The two virgin oils can be used directly in light service CI engine, For application in HSD engines the two oils need modifications so that specifications become closer to that of average HSD. Literature scan of technological aspects of biodiesels show the following gaps in knowledge which calls for further investigations to strengthen this technology. A) Comparative studies of preparation of bio-diesel and detailed characterization. B) Limited studies on blends involving ME of JC & PP with Euro-III & Euro-IV HSD and their characterization. C) Oxidation stability of neat ME and influence of antioxidants on the oxidation behavior of blended esters with petrodiesel.

Biodiesel was synthesized from vegetable oils by base-catalyzed transesterification with methanol in the presence of NaOH. The optimization of experimental parameters was established to achieve the maximum yield of product. The physical and fuel properties of biodiesel like dynamic viscosity, kinematic viscosity, acid number, density, flash point, cetane number, cloud point and pour point were determined and found comparable to ASTM standards. Prepared biodiesel was chemically characterized by FT-IR, NMR (1H & 13C) and GC-MS to elucidate the identification, quantification and chemical composition. The synthesis of biodiesel was confirmed by comparison of FT-IR and NMR (1H & 13C) analysis of oil and biodiesel. GC-MS analyses identified the chemical compositions of FAMEs in biodiesel and were verified by retention time data and mass fragmentation pattern.

The objective of the current study was to investigate the effect of different blended vegetable oils having different levels and profiles of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on hypercholesterolemia by analyzing the changes of lipid profile in high cholesterol diet fed rats. Rats fed blended oils showed significantly lower levels of total cholesterol (TC), total triacylglycerol (TG) and total low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol as well as higher levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in comparison with animals fed HCD and cholesterol free diet (CFD). Thus, oil blends under study may be useful formulations for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. In addition to improving the lipid profile by lowering TC, TG and LDL and increasing HDL, blending of vegetable oils can result in an economic advantage of lower prices.

This research work concerns with the synthesis and characterization of fatty hydroxamic acid FHA from several vegetable oils namely, corn oil, palm oil, olive oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil. The synthesis of FHA from these vegetable oils was done by three methods, i) from fatty acids FA (carboxylic acid), ii) from methyl/ethyl fatty esters, iii) directly from triacylglyceride. The obtained FHA was characterized by colorimetric, FT-IR and mass spectroscopy. Three clays namely, white kaolin, red kaolin and bentonite were modified by these FHA. These modified clays were characterized by FT-IR, SEM and XRD. The results of all these techniques were verified the modification. The mass uptake experiments were done in acidic and basic media. The results showed that the mass uptake in acidic medium was higher than that in basic medium. The results revealed that the maximum mass uptake was obtained with palm FHA using red kaolin in acidic medium. Generally, the presence of long-chain (mainly 16 and 18 carbon atoms) in FHAs containing O and N atoms suggests that the FHAs should be very useful as surfactants for clay modification.

Most of the inhibitors used in petroleum industry are organic compounds containing multiple bonds in their molecules that mainly contain nitrogen, sulphur, and/or oxygen atoms through which they get adsorbed on the metal surface. However, most of these substances are toxic and using them is harmful for both human health and environment. Therefore, in this work, we accomplished synthesis of new environment friendly effective corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas industry in the protection of equipment and pipelines transporting multiphase systems based on vegetable oils. Vegetable oils are of the greatest interest because of its technological properties, accessibility, and relatively low price. The performed research is indicating that the vegetable oil can be good raw material for preparation of “environmentally friendly” corrosion inhibitors.

This study is based on geochemical analysis and interpretation of a potential source rock, Chia Gara Formation (Tithonian-Berriassian), and five hydrocarbon oil samples from the different sections and wells. The oils are from two oil fields; Kirkuk oil field (K-252, K-265, K-215, and K-392) and Jambur oil field (Ja-15). Bulk geochemical data involve C/N/S-elemental data and Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses. Following extraction and MPLC fractionation, the aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon fractions were investigated by GC/MS. The Rock-Eval pyrolysis results, which carried out on the selected samples, gave different types of kerogen and different maturity stages. As a whole, the Chia Gara Formation from all wells has type II and III kerogens in mature stage in wells K-109 and Tk-3 totally, but in well Bj-1 it is partially mature and in well Hr-1 only the upper part is in early stage maturity. High levels and similar distribution patterns of organic sulfur compounds in Chia Gara source rock bitumens and reservoired oils most clearly document the genetic relationship. Aliphatic and aromatic biomarkers support an origin of Cretaceous reservoired oils from the Chia Gara Formation.

Vector borne viral diseases of vegetable crops are regarded as major limiting factor for crop production throughout the world. Ecological problems created by chemical pesticides for insect vectors and their relevance to human health are receiving serious attention. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are gaining importance and are considered most versatile biocontrol agents for the pest management for its wide host range and natural epizootics. The present study was focused on isolation of entomopathogenic fungi from insect cadavers, their characterization, testing of efficacy against different insect pests, their compatibility with chemical pesticides and their molecular characterization.Five different species were isolated from insect pests of vegetable ecosystem. We standardized their effective dose against Aphis crrassivora and Odontotermes obessus. Compatibility of twelve agrochemicals at lethal and sub lethal dose was tested with an aim to reduce the pesticides use and to get the synergistic effect of EPF and pesticides.This work will be helpful for Scientific community, Research Scholars, Students working on biocontrol of insect pests.

This contribution majorly describes the isolation of different collagens from marine Demosponges collected from Gulf of Mannar (GoM), India. Based on the preliminary studies (biochemical and anatomical evaluation of around 40 sponge species collected at GoM), few of the shortlisted sponges were subsequently analyzed for the collagen presence and in particular, Ircinia fusca was focused for further isolation and characterization of different collagens. Chapter I provides background information introducing the subjects presented in the topic of marine sponge biology and its scope. Chapter II narrates the brief methodology of each experiment starting from the collection of marine sponges and up to the immuno-electrophoretic characterization of collagens. Chapter III brought the findings of each experimental procedure that involved the isolation and characterization of different collagens from the experimental sponges. Chapter IV discusses the overall aspects of the different parameters involved in isolation, characterization and purification of marine sponge collagens in the current study as well as the future perspectives of the marine sponges.

Bio-diesel manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats and used cooking oils is an alternative fuel for diesel engines. It offers many advantages such as renewable, energy efficient, nontoxic, sulfur free and bio-degradable, and also offers cleaner combustion and reduces global warming gas emissions. The present work reports on the preparation of bio-diesel (methyl esters) from selected edible and non edible oils and their performance and emission characteristics. The experiments are carried out in three stages on a Single cylinder kirlosker diesel engine which is commonly used in agricultural sector. In the first stage, tests are carried out by fuelling the diesel engine with tallow oil methyl ester (TME) and its diesel blends. In the second stage, experiments are conducted by fuelling the diesel engine with bio-diesel with LPG blends. The engine is properly modified to operate under dual fuel operation using LPG as the blend fuel along with Diesel and TME as ignition source. Bio-diesel blended with LPG shows low emissions when compared to other blends.

Conversion of agricultural products to bio-energy can take many forms. Among the conversion options are ethanol from cellulose and biodiesel from vegetable oils. Cellulosic ethanol can be produced from several sources including lumber waste, forest undergrowth, perennial grasses, and stover from annual starch crops. The first paper in this dissertation focuses on the use of stover from sorghum and corn as a feedstock for cellulosic ethanol. Plant density is reviewed as a potential influence on the production of biomass. Biodiesel production can occur from multiple oil seed crops, dried distiller’s grains with solubles, and yellow grease. Increasing annual oil yield from oil seed crops will contribute to the availability of biodiesel if fuel use increase does not exceed biodiesel production potential from the oil yield increase. The second chapter attempts to increase annual oil yield by testing multiple crop combinations for oil yield. Demand for oil seed crops can influence the production of them. Separation of lipids for alternative markets will leave the remaining bulk of oils for use in biodiesel production. The third chapter displays the lipid profiles of four crops.

Biodiesel is one of the alternative fuels which derive from straight or used vegetable oils and animal fats. In this book, waste oil and fat were used to produce biodiesel. It was found that the conversion yield of biodiesel from waste oil is higher than that of animal fats. The biodiesel produced having lower gross heating value and viscosity compare to diesel fuel. Short-term engine performance tests were carried out using indirect injection (IDI) diesel engine fuelled with different fuels. Biodiesel blends produced higher brake power (kW) and BSFC (mL/kW), but lower engine power output (kW) as compare to normal diesel. The emission of CO, HC and NOx reduced as biodiesel blend percentage increase over engine speed range. Conversely, the power output decreased with blending percentage due to the lower energy content of the biodiesel compared to conventional diesel.

The current-voltage characterization under illumination found that the efficiency ? increase with increasing the thickness and annealing temperatures from 0.806 to 1.62 and from 0.806 to 2.61, while increasing with increasing annealing temperatures because of structure changes of the films and improve interface layer between a-Se and c-Si. At deposition SiO2 it was found from the current-voltage characterization under illumination that the values ? increase from 0.806 to 2.22.

The object of this study is antioxudant potential of different cold pressed and refined edible oils by application of different antioxidant assays. Antioxidant potential for particular cold pressed oil depends of the origin of seeds or plant from which the oil is obtained and the way on which the oil is extracted. For examination of the radical scavenger potential of the most consumable edible oils: DPPH assay, TEAC assay, HAPX assay and ?-carotene assay were applied. Cold pressed sunflower oil obtained by cold-pressing of high quality sunflower seeds contain significant level of vitamin-E-active compounds, especially ?-tocopherol. Since ?-tocopherol is oil soluble vitamin-E-active compound, DPPH assay was the most suitable for determination of antioxidant potential of this oil. ?-carotene assay is the best antioxidant assays for vegetable oils which consist significant amount of carotenes and licopenes.
