Due to its increasing applications in personal communications systems, body-centric wireless communications has become a major field of interest for researchers. Fading and interference are the two concerns that affect the reliability and quality of service of wireless links. Diversity has been used to overcome these two problems. This book looks into the use of receive diversity for on-body channels. Space, pattern, and polarization diversity performance is analyzed and quantified by actual measurements in real environments. The on-body diversity channels have also been characterized by performing the statistical and spectral analyses. Diversity has been found effective in the BAN-BAN interference rejection and significant rejection gain values are achieved. A new algorithm for BAN- BAN interference rejection has been proposed and compared with the conventional adaptive algorithms. The use of multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver end, i.e., MIMO has been investigated for on-body applications. It has been noticed that MIMO provides significant capacity increase for these channels despite the line-of-sight.

The present wireless systems aim for two conflicting goals, viz., providing quality of service such as delay, fairness to users, and maximizing the throughput of the system. This book investigates the performance of point-to-point wireless ad hoc networks. Approaching the design of these networks through the medium access control (MAC) layer, analytical expressions are derived for the outage probability, which is defined as the probability of receiving messages erroneously. Moreover, the impact of various ad hoc network characteristics (such as fading and bounded region) is investigated. Having established an understanding of the behavior of ad hoc networks, we propose MAC layer techniques to improve the performance. Three schemes are proposed: 1) optimization of the sensing threshold in CSMA, 2) enhanced decision making ability of CSMA, and 3) introduction of bandwidth partitioning. Finally, we step into the domain of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications. The performance of MIMO networks with no transmitter channel state information (CSIT) is analyzed, and different transmission schemes are proposed to achieve the best usage of transmit antennas. With the addition of CSIT, we consider various interference management schemes, and propose a distributed binary power control scheme that ensures an increase in the sum rate of MIMO networks.

The aim of this research work is to investigate error free transmission in wireless communications. High spectral efficiency and high transmission data rate are the challenging requirements of wireless broadband communications. The MIMO technology has rapidly gained in popularity due to its powerful performance-enhancing capabilities. Spatial diversity can be obtained by using multiple antennas and space-time codes. For future wireless broadband systems, OFDM is discussed as access scheme. OFDM provides an essentially flat fading channel for each subcarrier by insertion of a cyclic guard interval at each antenna. Therefore, space-time block codes are well suited to be applied in OFDM. We investigate SFBC for OFDM systems with multiple transmit antennas, where coding is applied in the frequency domain rather than in the time domain. In this thesis, performance of two coding techniques STBC and SFBC is analyzed in OFDM. In order to appreciate the performances offered by coding through space and frequency, different simulation scenarios have been proposed where variation of the modulation order , channel fading, antenna selection technique, receiver diversity and effect of power conditions have been considered.

This book focuses on the analysis of the probability of error and outage probability for several time-division multiple-access cooperative wireless two-stage relay protocols using amplify-and-forward (AF) over independent non-identically distributed Weibull and Weibull-lognormal fading channels with maximal ratio combining (MRC) reception. Simulation results show that the probability of error and the outage probability expression become tight at high SNR values thus verifying the lower bound approximation results. The potential gain of relaying is observed on the outage probability. Finally, depicted results explain how the outage probability and bit error rate (BER) are improved in multihop cooperative diversity (CD) networks.

This work proposes a new routing algorithm to allow communication in highly mobile, wireless ad-hoc networks, which by nature are wireless and infrastructureless. In motorway environments, the topology of the network changes frequently and is unpredictable due to the mobility of the nodes. We investigate a new reactive routing algorithm based on location information in the context of inter-vehicular communication. In such a scenario, the originator of the communication does not know the position of its communication partner in advance. Rapid topology changes and scarce bandwidth prevent the nodes from exchanging positions regularly throughout the network. Therefore, we focus on reactive algorithms and explore several mechanisms limiting the flooding of discoveries location packets. The originator of a message uses scoped and controlled flooding to reach the destination. The receivers of the flooded message use their knowledge of the local environment to decide whether they can reach the intended destination of the message or retransmit the message to their neighbours.

Wireless sensor network are a particular type of ad hoc network, which comprise of hundreds to thousands of miniaturized sensor nodes employed in a wide range of data gathering applications. Cooperative diversity has been proposed to enhance the performance of high-rate communications over wireless channels. It realizes spatial diversity advantages in a distributed manner where two or more nodes share their antennas to mimic a virtual antenna array. The current research on cooperative diversity assumes the availability of perfect channel state information at the receiver. However, in practice, the fading channel coefficients need to be first estimated and then can be used in the detection process. This book first presents a comparative performance evaluation of cascaded channel estimation and disintegrated channel estimation techniques proposed for amplify-and-forward (AaF) relaying. Afterwards, the error rate performance of AaF relaying with partially-coherent and mismatched-coherent receivers is analyzed and the achievable diversity orders for different protocols are demonstrated. Finally, an optimal power allocation scheme is proposed for AaF cooperative systems in the presence of channel estimation. Taking SNR ratio at the destination node as the objective function, the optimum allocation of training/data power to broadcasting and relaying phases is determined.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless systems that use multiple transmit and receive antennas allow a gain in reliability (diversity gain) and capacity (multiplexing gain). Unfortunately, these advantages come at the cost of higher computational complexity, particularly when using soft detection (SD). SD features improved performance compared to hard detection and is a prerequisite for iterative receiver structures (turbo receivers). In this thesis we consider the sphere decoder for soft-output MIMO detection and present modifications that allow flexible trade-offs between computational complexity on the one hand and performance and diversity on the other hand. Additionally to these two modifications we present a lower bound on partial sphere decoder metrics that allows to reduce the complexity of the detection using the sphere decoder without performance degradation.

A number of applications is presented to show how their performance could be evaluated using the proposed model and techniques.
