This study investigates the process of the legislative reforms in Turkey between 1998 and 2005 in the context of gender mainstreaming. To illustrate the process, descriptively, the actors behind the amendments in the Turkish Constitution, Civil Code, Penal Code, Labor Law and the Law on the Protection of the Family are investigated based on the “Gender and Development” approach. The study exposes that international organizations (EU and UN), women’s activism and state are incredibly influential in the process of the legislation stage of gender mainstreaming. The legislation stage of gender mainstreaming has been almost eventuated in Turkey, however, the second stage, which is institutionalization stage, has just started to be implemented. This study looks through the process using the "three legged correspondence".

The main aim of this study is to investigate the impact of women’s activism on the gender equality agenda in Turkey, specifically in terms of legislative reforms. In this context, this study is devoted to a more elaborate assessment of the Campaign for the Turkish Penal Code in 2005. This work is that women’s activism in Turkey, which made its way into public discourse in the 1980’s, maturing and becoming institutionalized in the 1990’s, transformed into an effective civil society agent in shaping social policy. In this process, women’s organizations increasingly engaged with international women’s rights mechanisms and used them in demanding the state to comply with its international obligations.

Sports law as a discipline is in its infacy in India and while gender issues in sports have received some attention, perhaps no book has been writen exclusively on this subject in the Indian context, suggesting legal reforms to address the same. Three students of a premier law college in India make this scholastic effort underlining crucial concerns associated with this field of study and suggesting changes in the present draft of the National Sports Bill, which is expected to be tabled in the not-so-distant monsoon session of the Indian Parliament. In order to understand this issue in context, a comparitive approach looking at the American legislative framework has been adopted. The position of international law on the point has also been examined at considerable length. The authors have not only looked at the issue solely from the legal perspective but also examined the sociological undercurrents underlying the same and suggested a policy framework that can help achieve gender equality in this sphere, which, as the authors argue, also serves as an effective medium of women empowerment in general. Both doctrinal and non-doctrinal research have been carried out by the authors.

Concern Worldwide, an International NGO, has worked in Zambia in partnership with the Mongu Farmers Association (MDFA) since 2002 to improve the livelihood security of men and women in rural Mongu district of Zambia. The book shows levels of women’s and men’s participation in the project regarding labour input and decision-making power, benefits enjoyed and the gender specific factors responsible. Women’s participation in Concern Worldwide project activities and enjoyment of benefits was lower compared to the men. Majority of men had access to information on project activities, run the project and earned high status and prestige in the community. The gendered outcomes are attributed to some cultural beliefs and attitudes in the community favourable to men but restrictive to women; gender imbalance and insensitivity in the executive committees; low education among women; lack of a gender mainstreaming strategy to address gender issues that constrained women’s participation; and poor communication skills among the MDFA leadership. The book recommends that organisations involved in livelihoods take a gender mainstreaming approach in implementing poverty reduction programmes.

In Aotearoa/ New Zealand the Government has introduced legislation designed to reduce and prevent violence in the home and has seen an increase in reported domestic violence since its introduction. Despite some evidence to the contrary, when all types of violence are taken into account the majority of victims are women and children. Domestic violence can be best understood in terms of power and control in relationships, and gender relations in our society, and our socio-cultural-historical context. Given our current legislative context, policing is a critical dimension of effective intervention to reduce and prevent domestic violence. This research explores women’s experiences of the policing of domestic violence in a rural, South Island locality.

Gender responsive budgeting (GRB) is implemented in more than 90 countries in the world as a strategy for gender mainstreaming. GRB entails gender budget analysis which has provided a range of understandings of the different impacts of budgets on women compared to men. The central characteristic of this analysis has been its attempt to systematically recognise the contribution of unpaid care work in socio-economic outcomes. In this context, time use analysis is potentially an important tool for uncovering the gender impacts of budgets. However, there is relatively little research using time use analysis to evaluate the provision of government services. In order to address some of these gaps in our understanding, this book aims to broaden gender budget analysis by developing new indicators of budgetary performance, focusing on the impact of men and women’s unpaid childcare work in Australia using time use analysis. This book will be useful not only for academic researchers but also for professionals working in international development and anyone with an interest in gender issues in public finance.

Although the civil war affects civilians, its impacts men and women in different ways, and it influence their gender roles and responsibilities. Comparatively little attention has been given to accessing the gender sensitivity of international organizations who implement post-conflict reconstruction programs. The different social, economic and political dimensions of war to peace transitions, and how they impact on gender relations, can shed some light on the complicated intersections of needs and interests in war torn societies. An examination of the policies of World Bank reveals that there is relatively little gender mainstreaming within their post-conflict operations. This research finds that lack of resources and coordination, the failure to build on local capacities, and a lack of commitment to gender mainstreaming are the main obstacles organizations face. To improve the situation it is recommended that organizations develop and use a ‘gender checklist'' at all stages of project planning, implementation and monitoring to ensure increased gender sensitivity in post-conflict programming.

Based on a sociological analysis of child custody trials, this book examines how parenthood is constructed, contested, and gendered in the legal realm in Turkey. Drawing from discursive and narrative analysis of thirty-four child custody cases heard in Istanbul, Turkey in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the study scrutinizes how women and men contest for and are awarded with a gendered set of parental rights and responsibilities in courts. The book, a slightly revised version of my Master’s thesis, shows that gendered inequalities are sustained and reproduced within the legal institution through a number of legal discursive tropes that assign unequal gendered expectations and entitlements to mothers and fathers. Situated at the intersection of sociological, socio-legal, and gender studies, this book will be of interest to scholars of gender and law in Turkey and beyond.

Gender inequality remains the greatest challenge for many societies and this has implications for the sustainable development and well-being of societies. There exists gender inequalities with regards to access to resources such as land, healthcare, credit, information, education and decision-making power between races and between the sexes. The advent of democracy brought freedom for all South Africans and the new government understood gender inequality as a deterrent to the achievement of sustainable development for all and the building of a democratic state. The National Policy Framework for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality provides a roadmap through which gender should be mainstreamed within government and elsewhere, towards achieving the goal of gender equality. This analysis specifically looked at the conceptualization, management and structures in place for gender mainstreaming. The findings indicate that the implementation of gender mainstreaming is varied in the Department, with considerable success towards the attainment of employment equity target of 50/50 women representation in senior management.

The book draws upon three empirical sources: in-depth interviews with welfare administrators, professionals working for and representatives of disability organizations; legislations, official reports and data obtained from state institutions; and testimonies of disabled people accessed through Engelliler.biz online forum. The book argues that the category of disability, which first came into being in 1970s, has become the main contour of the expansion of the welfare regime in Turkey. Nevertheless this expansion comes with liberal residualism with regard to restricted coverage of the programs and the introduction of work requirement for beneficiaries as well as conservative outlook due to its ideological commitment to the myth of family solidarity.

Although institutional care has started to be outmoded in the developed countries with development of different models of care, it still has a considerable place in the developing countries. This is because, changes in the demographic structure, extended family, and urban development of Turkey has brought about several aging problems leading older adults to end up in institutions. Loneliness was one of the significant reasons given in the Social Inquiry Survey of Applicants of Darulaceze and the basis for a micro level analysis in this study. Therefore, the main objective of the study was to determine the predictors of loneliness, including age, the state of living alone, functional independence, education, and gender. Analysis of the results indicated that these predictors have significant effects on the loneliness predominantly defined by social factors rather than medical factors. In addition, the meso and macro level analyses were employed to control the micro level analysis and see a general picture of institutional care. Thus, an academic example of diagnosing the main reasons behind the institutional care was presented to understand the context of aging in Turkey.

The study set to interrogate how gender is constructed in the community engaged in implementing the Millennium Village Project (MVP) in Kenya and consider the implications for the role of women and gender. The study advances an argument that the construction of gender in the African setting is very different from the universalized western conceptualization of gender. It is appropriate for international development agencies to take cognizance of details of conceptualization of concepts such as gender. Africans should avoid the tendency to universalise and essentialise Western conceptions and instead define social phenomenon on their own terms. Western demands to create gender equality in Africa often fail because they do not work in tandem with the African worldview. It concludes that the Western designers of projects like the MVP and donors of the gender programs will not be able to sustain their work unless they take account of local perceptions. In the MVP context, gender has been grounded on parity of access to services and positions of power in the village. However, equality otherwise clothed as parity in access numbers, does not necessarily translate into gender equity.

Previous research has established a link between the level of transposition of EU legislation and the national government’s characteristics and preferences. In the area of gender equality this has been labelled as the national gender regime of a country. Studies from Ostner and Lewis and Clavero and Galligan have shown that this gender regime can constrain a country in transposing the EU’s gender legislation. This thesis continues this path of research by examining the levels of transposition and gender regimes in Croatia and Turkey. Both of these countries are compared to Slovenia, which had been identified in earlier research as easily complying with EU legislation. It finds that challenges to transposition continue to exist in Croatia and Turkey. However, all of the three countries, including Slovenia, show a different gender regime and a different transposition performance. This study concludes that the EU is able to influence these countries on different levels because of the countries’ gender regimes.

It does this by looking specifically at changes in the structures and processes of regional policy-making; changes in participation in the policy-making process; and changes in the role and influence of key actors in the policy-making process. This study is also comparative across both time and space, comparing regional policy-making in Turkey before and after candidate status was announced and comparing developments in Turkey with those in a number of EU member/accession states. The book argues that the main catalyst of these changes in Turkish regional policy-making are the EU''s institutional conditions for membership. However, the research claims that not only the EU requirements but also the non-EU forces in the form of global competitive pressures, the legislative changes at the national level and the efforts of national and regional NGOs have had a significant impact in the Turkish regional policy-making after the EU candidacy decision.

Moreover the study tried to uncover the anticipated factors behind the rear or null representation of women in the leadership arena of the studied colleges. The patriarchal nature of the society, rigid gender division of labor among the community, women''s failure to fulfill the required academic qualifications and women''s lack of confidence and interest to assume leadership and managerial positions proved as the main factors for the invisibility of women in the leadership scenario. The research also deals with the importance of women''s visibility in leadership and it has discovered that it is important to create gender friendly environment in the colleges and to discuss gender issues in a mainstreaming mode as such issues usually are less discussed in managerial meetings. In addition, women''s representation in such positions will imperative to be role models so as to change the masculine paradigm of management.

The scope of this book is to compare the Basque Autonomous Region in Spain with the Kurdish case in Turkey within the theory of autonomy. In this perspective, it is aimed to analyse whether the Basque Autonomous model can be implemented for the solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey. Therefore, this book tries to fill the gap for researchers, academicians and the people interested in the subject.

The study looked at how the global/transnational gender equality agenda has been institutionalized in Lesotho. it looks at how different state and non state actors have shaped the articulation and implementation of gender equality issues. the actors are the political parties, NGO community, women's organizations, the donor community and the Government institutions. The study has argued that this global agenda is not imposed in Lesotho, but that Lesotho has used the transnational space to institutionalism gender equality in policies and laws. however, because of the entrenched patriarchal ideologies, the parameters of gender equality debates have been shaped by male dominated institutions and in particular these forces have marginalized women's political representation. on the other hand legal activism has been successful to shape legal reforms while women's voice in decision making is still marginalized.

The education gender gap is closing. Since the 1980s examination results have changed dramatically, as girls have "caught up" and, in some cases, overtaken boys. Through an analysis of the postwar transformation in British economic, social and cultural life, this important book provides valuable insights into how and why this unprecedented change has taken place. In particular, the book focuses on the welfare state and the education reforms under Margaret Thatcher which encouraged this momentum for change despite her personal efforts to re–instil Victorian educational values. These reforms, the authors argue, coupled with the women?s movement, re–shaped girls? and boys? identities and educational choices irrevocably, but not necessarily in the same or complementary ways.Closing the Gender Gap will be essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students in education, sociology and gender studies.

The impacts of gender policy transfer in Afghanistan raise certain problems and questions, such as: How did the gender policy transfer occur, and in what context? Was it an internal need or an external coercion? What type of policy transfer was it? What were the impacts, and what do they imply? Was the policy transfer successful, and why? Both qualitative and quantitative methods are used, by manipulating both primary and secondary data. The Maqasid approach and the Systems approach are used to further investigate the gender issue. The research has reached some conclusions, which can be summarised as: that there was a gap in the gender equality in the society which opened the door to the transfer of gender policy. Reforms from the civilizational sphere are most welcome, but there is a tendency towards accepting international standards which are not in obvious clash with Islamic values and local customs. Generally, females were welcoming the gender equality concept, while males were doing so with more reservation and setting conditions. As a backlash response from some males, the gender policy has increased the violence towards females.

A number of economic reforms had existed before the democratic government took over office in Nigeria in 1999. These reforms were bedeviled with huge challenges such as misappropriation, low participation of stakeholders and the civil society amongst others. The National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy was initiated in 2004 to correct the inadequacies of the past reforms. Nevertheless, the literature is scanty on the appraisal of the NEEDS programme. In what way was NEEDS different from past reforms? This book filled the gap in the literature by appraising the performance of the programme on the education sector by examining to what extent its stated goals were achieved. Findings from the study revealed that although modest success was recorded during the programme,it was an improvement over past reforms.

Revision with unchanged content. Nigeria has acceded to several regional and international covenants promoting the rights and well-being of women. In July 2000 it made an official statement of intent to promote gender equality by endorsing a National Policy on Women. Yet, the vast majority of women persist on the periphery of economic and political life. In spite of a considerable degree of compatibility between women’s aspirations and the NPW, particularly in terms of addressing immediate practical necessity, awareness of its existence and that of the new National Gender Policy remains low. Consequently, there is no concerted agenda to push for policy implementation. The Gender Management System put in place by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to oversee the mainstreaming of gender policy is undermined by institutionalised and routinised gender bias and by systemic distortions in the wider policy environment. This book examines the relevance of the NPW to the aspirations of Nigerian women, through their eyes. It explores the experiences, perspectives and collective agendas of women across class, ethnicity and religion to discover their understandings of the present and visions for the future. It also investigates the extent to which state institutional capability exists to implement gender policy, and to mainstream gender perspectives as the policy stipulates.

The aim of this psychological study was to uncover women minister?s experiences of gender discrimination in the Lutheran Church by using a discourse analysis. Three female participants, who are involved in ministry in the Lutheran Church, were interviewed about their experiences and perceptions of gender discrimination. The resultant texts were analysed using Parker?s (2005) steps to discourse analytic reading. The discourses that were discovered indicate that power struggles are prevalent in the context of gender discrimination. The extent to which an individual opposes gender discrimination is informed by contextual, educational and historical factors. In addition to this, gender discrimination within the church is easily legitimised – to a large extent by women – through discourses, such as Biblical texts.

This research aims to explore how can the place of local history and museums in history education in Turkey be improved. During the research 16 history teachers and 4 curators were interviewed. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 320 final year secondary students from two different cities of Turkey. In the book a general description of the Turkish educational system and its historical context, the content and methods of history lessons in Turkish schools, the problems related to teaching history in Turkey and the place of local history and museums in history education is introduced. The research shows that although museum visits and local history studies can offer great opportunities to history lessons they are not used effectively in Turkish schools for a variety of reasons. On the basis of the research evidence, the reasearch outlines possible strategies for the inclusion of local history and museums within the history curriculum. It is argued that this inclusion must be accompanied by pedagogical change if the teaching of local history is to improve the effectiveness and value of history education. The implications of this for teachers and museum educators are explored.

The approach of the EU on Corporate Governance has undergone a constant development. Initially considered a part of national company law of its member countries, it made its way to become an interdisciplinary matter dealt with at EU level. With regards to Turkey the challenge is of double nature: the harmonization of its related regulations in accordance with the acquis communautaire within the EU accession process and the improvement of its competitiveness to attract more foreign investments. This work analyses the benefits and features of Corporate Governance and identifies the convergence/divergence areas in the Corporate Governance practices among EU members. It provides an overview of Turkey''s regulations, implementations and recent reforms revealing its weaknesses/strengths and similarities/differences compared to the EU. The book concludes with recommendations on future priorities and initiatives for Turkey. As this book deals with theoretical, legal and practical aspects of Corporate Governance in the EU and Turkey, it appeals to academicians and practitioners as well as investors seeking to understand the applied standards.

The book also tries to shed a light on how Turkey adapted herself to this process on the way of full membership to the European Union (EU). As a result of this process, this work basically underlines the reformation process of Turkey through the crucial harmonization packages and various constitutional amendments concerning democracy, the rule of law, human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of expression and the protection of minorities. In this context, civilianization and democratization process of the Turkish political system in terms of ‘Europeanization’ has been gradually developed, thus, this process has been essentially beneficial for Turkey in all respects. At the same time, the European Commission’s regular progress reports towards the Turkish accession process are used as a primary source in order to monitor the democratic developments made in Turkey on the road to EU accession. The framework proposed to study the Turkish case is intended to contribute to the knowledge of Europeanization and Turkey-EU relations.

How does social context influence the similarity effects on organizational attachment? Using self-categorization theory, similarity attraction theory and social identity theory as the theoretical underpinning, I explore the research question in the formal work group and the organizational reference group, two different conceptualizations of social context. Contrary to predictions, no significant similarity effects were found in either context. In testing a revised model in which communication is a partial mediator between similarity and organizational attachment, however, I find that organizational reference group similarity in gender, ethnicity and organizational tenure significantly predict organizational attachment. In particular, similarity in ethnicity negatively predicts job satisfaction, one measure of organizational attachment. Such results show that a direct positive similarity effect may be too simplistic to capture the nuances in people’s psychological and behavioral reactions to demographic similarity.

Changes in the external environment force businesses to go through periods of transition chracterized by changing institutions and deviation from established ways of conducting business. Businesses in India started responding to changes in the early nineties with the opening up of the economy. Reforms in some capital intensive sectors like the electricity sector were initiated by encouraging private sector participation in electricity generation. It was expected that reforms would attract private players in the electricity industry and lead to improvements in efficiency and diffusion of new technologies. The book examines the influence of shifts in the external environment in the form of reforms and its implications for efficiency and technology strategies and links them with growth and green orientation.

In this bold effort, Ayo Ayodele presents a typological framework for the description of the linguistic, interactional and discursive resources required for members' effective participation in the legislature. Drawing on insights from the conversation analytic, speech act and Dijk's contextual theories,he explores the nature of turn-taking and topical development highlighting their lexico-grammatical features. Other structural and functional properties of utterances that enhance propositional development in legislative discourse are also highlighted in the book. In this qualitative study I explored how postgraduate psychology students treat gender in their accounts of their future profession, using a social constructionist framework. I considered how this group of future psychologists drew upon gendered accounts in three different settings in which they found themselves within the profession. These different settings included exploring how participants constructed their own gendered identities in their narratives of how they came to be pursuing professional training in psychology; how gender featured in their accounts of therapeutic processes and interactions with clients; and finally, their reflections on gendered participation in the broader field of psychology. This study intended to contribute to the expansion of existing literature by addressing the issue of gender and its related aspects in the field of psychology in a South African context, given the dearth of extended research conducted in developing countries so far. The findings supported those of previous studies to an extent, but mainly redressed the perspective of gender through the identification of new themes.
