An average student, Chekhov reportedly learned far more from his gifted mother, whose compelling stories interested him in storytelling at an early age. Considered the "father" of the modern short story and the modern play, The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories includes early Chekhov stories of note including "Oysters," "Vanka" and the lyrical "A Day in the Country." Translator Constance Garnett was a contemporary of Chekhov's, and while her translations of other nineteenth-century Russian authors have sometimes been faulted, her carefully-chosen translations provide near-contemporary English versions of Chekhov's elegant language and incomparable imagery.

While at a party organized by the local landowner for the officers of his brigade, the shy and awkward Ryabovich is suddenly kissed by an unknown woman in a dark room. This unexpected, electrifying encounter, which he relives in his mind day after day, marks a turning point for Ryabovich, showing him that everything in life - joy, sorrow, hope - is equally pointless and subject to chance. One of Chekhov's most admired stories, 'The Kiss' is joined in this volume by six other celebrated tales in a brand-new translation by Hugh Aplin: 'The Lady with the Little Dog', 'Ward Six', 'The Black Monk', 'The House with a Mezzanine', 'The Bishop' and 'Peasants' - making this an indispensable collection for those wanting to discover Chekhov at his creative best.

In the final years of his life, Chekhov had reached the height of his powers as a dramatist, and also produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces. The poignant 'The Lady with the Little Dog' and 'About Love' examine the nature of love outside of marriage - its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. And in stories such as 'Peasants', 'The House with the Mezzanine' and 'My Life' Chekhov paints a vivid picture of the conditions of the poor and of their powerlessness in the face of exploitation and hardship. With the works collected here, Chekhov moved away from the realism of his earlier tales - developing a broader range of characters and subject matter, while forging the spare minimalist style that would inspire such modern short-story writers as Hemingway and Faulkner.

Of the two hundred stories that Anton Chekhov wrote, the twenty stories that appear in this extraordinary collection were personally chosen by Richard Ford an accomplished storyteller in his own right. Included are the familiar masterpieces - The Kiss, The Darling, and The Lady with the Dog - as well as several brilliant lesser-known tales such as A Blunder, Hush!, and Champagne. These stories, ordered from 1886 to 1899, are drawn from Chekhov's most fruitful years as a short-story writer. A truly balanced selection, they exhibit the qualities that make Chekhov one of the greatest fiction writers of all time: his gift for detail, dialogue, and humor; his emotional perception and compassion; and his understanding that life's most important moments are often the most overlooked. The reason we like Chekhov so much, now at our century's end, writes Ford in his perceptive introduction, is because his stories from the last century's end feel so modern to us, are so much of our own time and mind. Exquisitely translated by the renowned Constance Garnett, these stories present a wonderful opportunity to introduce yourself or become reaquainted with an artist whose genius and influence only increase with every passing generation.

Mustafa Kirca Alan Ayckbourn in Chekhov's Footsteps. A Study of Chekhovian Character Traits in Ayckbourn Drama.

Подробнее...

3239 руб.
Mustafa Kirca explores the dark sides of Alan Ayckbourn's comedy by comparing the playwright's characters with those of Chekhov's drama and drawing a parallelism in the character portrayal of both artists. The significance of Ayckbourn's plays, following Chekhov's footsteps, particularly lies in his vivid portrayal of characters from everyday life with psychological depth. Kirca shows that the fine mix of comedy and tragedy in Ayckbourn's drama is conveyed through his realistic characterization contrary to the farcical style of his plays. This kind of character portrayal in Ayckbourn's plays brings him very close to Chekhov and establishes the known equilibrium between comedy and tragedy in his theatre. The study covers Ayckbourn's Absent Friends, Just Between Ourselves, Joking Apart, Season's Greetings, Woman in Mind, A Small Family Business, and Henceforward. From Chekhov's drama, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard are included to define the general Chekhovian character traits. The book is especially interesting for teachers, students, and for general readers who are interested in modern 'human comedies'.

The style of E. W. Farnsworth’s stories reminds one of Chandler or Elroy on amphetamines. John ‘Jack’ Fulghum, Private Investigator, bachelor, former war hero and iveterate outsider, solves grisly homicide cases that stump the overworked police forces of Boston and other cities. To solve these cases, he crosses jurisdictional boundaries in the US and abroad with his team of like-minded friends, Nigel Pounce of Boston Homicide, and Kenneth Mander of the Central Intelligence Agency. These stories are not for the faint of heart. In Hammer, the hard-boiled detective solves the case of the bloodthirsty murder and chainsaw dismemberment of two men and a woman. In Crop Duster, he solves the case of the execution style murders of two boys who witnessed an unacknowledged black operation in the Deep South. In three linked stories, Fulghum works for a gypsy family and becomes involved in a gypsy war. Two linked Hacker stories tell how Fulghum works unofficially with the CIA and NSA to track down a vicious hacker. In Bloody End of the Line, the detective helps eliminate some of the worst ISIS beheading murderers. Finally, three linked Headshot stories are about a sniper’s legacy bringing the detective face to face with the killer on Boston Common, and a domestic intelligence organization with tentacles that reach to an island off the coast of Venezuela. Farnsworth suggests much more than he tells in stories that sit on the edge of a barely visible, deadly and forbidden territory that twi...

Chekhov Anton The Steppe and Other Stories

Anton Chekhov widely hailed as the supreme master of the short story also wrote five works long enough to be called short novels-here brought together in one volume for the first time in a masterly new translation by the award-winning translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. The Steppe - the most lyrical of the five - is an account of a nine-year-old boy's frightening journey by wagon train across the steppe of southern Russia. The Duel sets two decadent figures-a fanatical rationalist and a man of literary sensibility-on a collision course that ends in a series of surprising reversals. In The Story of an Unknown Man, a political radical spying on an important official by serving as valet to his son gradually discovers that his own terminal illness has changed his long-held priorities in startling ways. Three Years recounts a complex series of ironies in the personal life of a rich but passive Moscow merchant. In My Life, a man renounces wealth and social position for a life of manual labor. The resulting conflict between the moral simplicity of his ideals and the complex realities of human nature culminates in a brief apocalyptic vision that is unique in Chekhov's work.

"The Chorus Girl" is a story of the type that made Chekhov famous: keenly-observed, acerbic, and perfectly-paced. Pasha, the chorus girl of the title, is an aging ingénue who is suddenly confronted by the slim, prim and intimidating wife of one of her legion of gift-bearing admirers. Out of guilt and sentimentality, Pasha accedes to the aggrieved wife's demand to return all of the gifts that her husband has given, although this unfaithful husband among the many has given her only two inexpensive items. Not long after the husband arrives at Pasha's flat to discover that his wife has been there and learned of his infidelity, the chorus girl keenly regrets her actions and the tragic-comedy of her life. The dozen stories in this collection also include "Rothschild's Fiddle," which tells the story of Yakov Ivanov, a village undertaker who realizes too late what an angry, hate-filled life he has led and whose violin lives on after his death.
