Despite the reliance on energy permeating the whole economy, no such complete relationships had been presented before. How related are energy and the economy? What role does energy play in the eco­nomic growth? Motivated to seek an explicit functional answer, I theorize the role of energy and then test it with economic models, using data for 16 OECD countries from 1980 to 2001. First, I find that energy is a cross-country re­presentative good whose prices are equalized when converted to a reference currency. Thus, energy prices satisfy the purchasing power parity. For all but one country, the half life of the real energy exchange rate is less than a year and as low as six months, shorter than those derived by other real exchange rate measures. Second, considering energy a cross-time representative good, I obtain that a country's utility function is inversely proportional to both its in­come share of energy and its energy price. I also obtain an explicit, unified two-dimensional (cross countries and time) production function with energy and non-energy as the two inputs. Third, I conclude a cross-country parity relationship for income shares of energy, similar to that for energy prices.

Instabilities complicate the confinement of plasma in the laboratory. Instabilities are necessary to study for controlled thermonuclear fusion research. In this paper parametric instability, oscillating two stream instability and parametric decay instability are discussed. Also, the third moment equation and its derivation are discussed in detail. This work examines whether installing solar power systems is an effective catalyst for stimulating energy saving strategies in schools by investigating the findings from a mixed-methods study of a solar schools initiative in Australia. The question of whether schools with solar power installations come to view (attitudes) and use (behaviours) energy differently from schools without renewable energy technology is examined. A number of barriers to the implementation of successful solar school programs are a also identified.

This book consists of two parts. In the first part, we investigate the superconducting proximity effect in a clean magnetic structure consisting of two ferromagnetic layered domains with antiparallel magnetizations in contact with a superconductor. Within the quasiclassical Green''s function approach we find that the penetration of the superconducting correlations into the magnetic domains can be enhanced as compared to the corresponding single domain structure. This enhancement depends on an effective exchange field which is determined by the thicknesses and exchange fields of the two domains. In the second part, we study the superconducting proximity effect in a clean nonmagnetic metal in contact with a ferromagnetic superconductor which has a nonunitary f-wave triplet order parameter. Using the quasiclassical Green''s function approach, we solve the Eilenberger equation analytically in a non-self-consistent form. The density of states is obtained in the bulk of the ferromagnetic superconductor and it is plotted versus the energy. We have compared energy-dependence of density of states with the corresponding dependences for s-wave and d-wave superconductors.

An increased awareness of the environment and the growing energy needs of countries like China and India have accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel energy sources. Generating electricity from ocean waves is a viable alternative. This is because the energy densities are sufficient to supplement the grid and thus make it economically viable. The seasonal supply profile also matches the demand profile. There are currently many different devices operating on different principles, the most promising of these is the oscillating body device using a linear generator. Linear generators are able to convert linear motion into electrical energy without the need for intermediate gears, screws or crank shafts. This increases the overall efficiency and makes the device more reliable. Static force simulations were done on a novel linear generator design. The generator combines the duel air-gap of a double sided topology with the encapsulation of the magnetic field in a tubular topology. This results in an increased force density, but also large cogging forces. The topic of this thesis is to find suitable methods of reducing the cogging forces.

Kinetic energy is a non-zero positive value in many cases of bound states, when a wave function is a real-valued one and there are no visible motion and flux. The most promising solution to face these issues is the introduction of renewable energy sources on distribution level. However, since the generation output of renewable energy sources is very volatile, new energy management concepts are required that enhance the integration of renewables and simultaneously reduce the amount of electricity required from external grids. In order to address this topic, a market-based multi-agent system is developed and implemented that pursues the goal to manage the energy supply and demand of a distributed energy system. The focus is put on the coordination of electro-thermal heating devices, such as CHP units or HPs, that are installed in each house combined with a thermal buffer storage. To enable the interaction of the houses a local electricity market is established, on which the participants are able to trade electricity. The variable market price serves as incentive to shift production and consumption of the heating devices. In a second step, the idea of price anticipation is presented. Price anticipation gives house agents the chance to react to expected price changes in the near future and therefore increase their economical benefit.
