Wave Power: how to produce clean electric energy from sea waves. Thousands of patents have been filed, hundreds of devices have been studied and tested in labs and tens of prototypes of Wave Energy Converters (WECs) have been deployed to the sea successfully harvesting wave power. The main research work has been carried out for the oceans, the most relevant source of wave energy. Closed seas, like the Mediterranean Sea, have smaller energy availability, but they have a particular feature: short waves. Short waves have higher frequency and can activate a WEC in a very effective way. For instance a WEC carrying a gyroscope-based energy conversion system harvests power proportionally to the square of the wave frequency. Gyroscopic effects can keep a spinning top in a quasi vertical position, guide airplanes, stabilize ships and, with some different architecture and strategy, harvest energy from sea waves!

Detached breakwaters and interaction between different systems of the existing breakwaters provide higher values of wave energy dissipation. Due to the absence of field data, numerical simulation becomes more important.To obtain realistic estimates of random, short-crested wind-generated waves in such condition for a given bottom topography, wind field, water level and current field, the numerical wave model SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore) can be used. SWAN wave model can be used not only for helping us to realize the wave effects on the coastal structures but also to predict the wave climate and characteristics in wave hind-casting.

An increased awareness of the environment and the growing energy needs of countries like China and India have accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel energy sources. Generating electricity from ocean waves is a viable alternative. This is because the energy densities are sufficient to supplement the grid and thus make it economically viable. The seasonal supply profile also matches the demand profile. There are currently many different devices operating on different principles, the most promising of these is the oscillating body device using a linear generator. Linear generators are able to convert linear motion into electrical energy without the need for intermediate gears, screws or crank shafts. This increases the overall efficiency and makes the device more reliable. Static force simulations were done on a novel linear generator design. The generator combines the duel air-gap of a double sided topology with the encapsulation of the magnetic field in a tubular topology. This results in an increased force density, but also large cogging forces. The topic of this thesis is to find suitable methods of reducing the cogging forces.

Various types of wave occur within the plasma. Collisions between plasma particles reduce the amplitude of the wave and the energy is transferred from the wave field to the plasma particles. If the energy is transferred from plasma particle to the wave field, then amplitude of the wave increases. This gives instabilities. Instabilities complicate the confinement of plasma in the laboratory. Instabilities are necessary to study for controlled thermonuclear fusion research. In this paper parametric instability, oscillating two stream instability and parametric decay instability are discussed. Also, the third moment equation and its derivation are discussed in detail. This book may be helpful to the students studying instabilities.

This book consists of two parts. In the first part, we investigate the superconducting proximity effect in a clean magnetic structure consisting of two ferromagnetic layered domains with antiparallel magnetizations in contact with a superconductor. Within the quasiclassical Green''s function approach we find that the penetration of the superconducting correlations into the magnetic domains can be enhanced as compared to the corresponding single domain structure. This enhancement depends on an effective exchange field which is determined by the thicknesses and exchange fields of the two domains. In the second part, we study the superconducting proximity effect in a clean nonmagnetic metal in contact with a ferromagnetic superconductor which has a nonunitary f-wave triplet order parameter. Using the quasiclassical Green''s function approach, we solve the Eilenberger equation analytically in a non-self-consistent form. The density of states is obtained in the bulk of the ferromagnetic superconductor and it is plotted versus the energy. We have compared energy-dependence of density of states with the corresponding dependences for s-wave and d-wave superconductors.

Laser ablation in liquid is becoming an important technique for the generation of nanoparticles (NPs). Until now only pulsed lasers have been used; this is a pioneer work, using high-power, high-brightness continuous-wave (CW) fibre laser ablation in liquid, for the generation of NPs. A mechanism is proposed based on experimental observations, including high-speed imaging and emission spectroscopic analysis of the ablated plume. Three different target materials (Titanium, Nickel and Alpha-aluminium-oxide), submerged in either water or sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) solution at various concentrations were used. The characterisation of the generated metal-oxide NPs, in terms of size, size-distribution, shape, chemical composition and phase structure was carried out by UV-Vis photo-spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM with energy-dispersive X-rays spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. This study paves a route towards a new application of CW fibre lasers. Kinetic energy is a non-zero positive value in many cases of bound states, when a wave function is a real-valued one and there are no visible motion and flux. This can be understood, using expansion of the wave function into Fourier integral, that is, on the basis of virtual plane waves. This explanation was proposed by the author in 1963 when the author had been studying Quantum Mechanics. Self-action in a system of elementary particles, charged with elementary charges, is discussed in detail. This self-action is not taken in account in Quantum Mechanics, because otherwise experimental data (including data on atomic spectra) could not be theoretically explained. In Quantum Mechanics sometimes there is an electrostatic field without any electrostatic energy stored in it, and electrostatic negative energy with no charge and no electrostatic field, like in a positronium. Criteria for low-dimensional quantum movements are derived, quantum and classical rotations of modern objects are regarded. Simplified theory of polarons and bipolarins is proposed, and simple explanation of coexistence of zero angular momentum and non-zero magnetic moment in many-electron system is discussed.

The thermoacoustic engine is a device that converts heat energy into sound or acoustic power. They are used currently to recover waste heat from military vehicles and converting it to electricity, which means that such devices can play a significant role in power generation for domestic & commercial purposes. This study demonstrates an attempt to design a 1-meter-long thermoacoustic heat engine with optimum efficiency. This will be done using DeltaEC, a software which was developed especially for the modeling of low amplitude thermoacoustic devices. The optimization process includes geometrical parameters of the resonator tube and the stack, the working fluid, and the heat input to the engine. The present optimization process has shown that slab stacks made of Celcor (a Ceramic material) demonstrated much better performance than other stack shapes and materials. For a 1.1239-meter-long and 0.011 m2 square-shaped resonator tube, a 7.75 cm long slab stack made of Celcor having 0.304 mm-thick-plates, spaced by 0.648 mm, giving a porosity ratio of 0.68067, will theoretically convert heat to acoustic power at an efficiency of 30.611% which is equivalent to 47.97% of Carnot’s efficiency.

More effort need to be applied to place where there is more exergy destruction. This work is an energy and exergy analysis of a 43 MW captive co-generation steam power plant at a chemical plant. The co-generation plant produces power and steam from turbine can be used for process heating. Energy and exergy analysis is carried out for all individual components of the plant like boiler, turbine, condenser etc. Major exergy destruction is seen in combustor and heat recovery system. Frequent soot blowing and excess air control are recommended to improve performance of this plant. This can improve boiler efficiency by 2.2% and also reduce environmental emissions significantly. It is recommended to operate plant at high maximum continuous rating (MCR) for higher exergy efficiency of turbine.

We have solved the Wheeler-De Witt equation and obtained the wave function of the universe. We found that density parameter is related to probability. Moreover, we have found that the scale factor is imaginary. From Stefan's law we have found the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) temperature.when the universe radius is large, the expansion rate is slow, equation (2-26) which is the expression for the density reduces to that of GR, the density of universe decreases with time as radius increases in conformity with observations. When the radius is assumed to be very small with high expansion rate i.e. a>0 ,a ?>?, as happens at early universe, the pressure becomes negative. This also agrees with inflation assumption. We constructed the generalized wave-function in interval of -1?n?1 . and obtained the energy states of the universe . We found E=0 ,when n=a/(2a-1) . This leads to E=0 at radiation era. We calculated the Curvature density parameter ? and the Curvature energy density?. At early universe we found a new Phantom energy, increasing with time.

In the present work, we study the statistics of wavefields obtained from non-linear phase-resolved simulations. The numerical model used to generate the waves models wave-wave interactions based on the fully nonlinear Zakharov equations. We vary the simulated wavefield's input spectral properties: directional spreading function, Phillips parameter and peak shape parameter. We then investigate the relationships between a wavefield's input spectral properties and its output physical properties via statistical analysis. We investigate surface elevation distribution, wave definition methods in a nonlinear wavefield with a two-dimensional wavenumber, defined waves' distributions, and the occurrence and spacing of large wave events.

Energy management for the purpose of improving energy efficiency and conservation still remains a daunting challenge in developing countries. Zambia is one such country facing electricity power deficit partially due to weak policies in the energy sector and largely due to ineffective energy management practices. With a projected electricity demand growth estimated at 100 MW per annum, Zambia has already started experiencing power deficit. The country’s electricity is predominantly consumed by the mining industry, which is estimated at 68 % currently while only 19 % is consumed by households. However, little has been done to manage, conserve, and expand the installed capacity for electricity generation in Zambia. Energy auditing is vital in managing a large resource such as energy, and could play a key role in determining efficient use of energy and there after take measures of conserving it. The purpose of this research is to determine preliminary energy audit information in the energy intensive sectors of Kansanshi copper mine. The study has reviewed energy conserving measures which can be implemented to conserve energy and thereby reduce the cost of production at the mine.

The development of simple analytical method(s) for solving the first-order wave functions and the second-order energy for two-electron atoms has remained a major challenge of theoretical atomic physics. The failure to overcome this challenge has motivated progress in the variational-perturbation method. However, the main drawback of the method is that it fails to directly account for the mechanisms which cause nuclear charge screening usually introduced as one of the variation parameters. In the book, we have developed a simple analytical solution to the Schrodinger equation for two-electron atoms based on a model that formulates the role of the repulsive electron-electron interaction term in nuclear charge screening. We have obtained an analytical expression of the first-order perturbed wave functions for two-electron atoms in the model and applied it to calculate second-order energy. The general analytic structure of the wave functions is an important guideline in the choice of the basis functions for use in the variational calculations.

In the present work the ground state energy of two weakly coupled Bose Einstein condensates separated by double well potential is estimated in three dimensions. By solving three dimensional time independent Gross Pitaevskii equation wave function, density, kinetic energy, potential energy, self energy and total energy of the Bose-Einstein condensates in double well potential have been studied. All these various quantities are also numerically calculated by using Thomas-Fermi Approximation (TFA). It is found that at small number of condensate atoms (N) in the trap, the results obtained from these two methods are quite different but when number of condensate atoms in the trap goes on increasing, the values calculated by using TFA is closer and closer to that obtained from the numerical calculation method. When the value of N is increased, tunneling current in TFA begins to appear and coherent splitting of matter waves starts to be affected. Hence for sufficiently larger value of N, there is "Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking". Further we have numerically calculated the first excited state wave function, density, kinetic energy, potential energy, self energy and total energy.

An oil/pebble–bed thermal energy storage (TES) system to enhance the performance of a solar cooker is characterized by simulation and experiment. Mathematical models to describe the thermal parameters of the solar cooking and TES system are developed using energy balance equations. The models are validated with experimental data and reasonable agreement between experiment and model is achieved. Two charging methods of the TES system are proposed and implemented using a Simulink block model in the Matlab environment.The constant flow rate (CFC) method charges the storage at a constant flow rate while the constant temperature charging (CTC) method maintains the outlet charging temperature at a constant value by making the flow rate variable. Simulation results indicate a greater degree of thermal stratification, a greater energy stored and a greater exergy stored when using constant temperature charging.The performance of three solid material (fused silica glass, alumina, stainless steel) for the pebbles is simulated and compared in terms of the axial temperature distribution, the energy stored and the exergy stored.
