The 1994 genocide against the tutsi shocked the world. Scholars analyzed what could have led to such a mass atrocity and the media -radio in particular- came up as a contributing factor. Now that the country is in a process of reconstruction; radio, the most popular medium in developing countries, has been seen as a partner in contributing to building peace. This research argues that radio broadcasting; although a double edge sword; remains a powerful tool for peacebuilding, healing and reconciliation in post-conflict settings. Through a critical, careful and detailed analysis, the author threads out the interweaved components of this complex issue that has been over-simplified in the past, and through this the reader gets a better understanding of the radio's contribution and limitations to peacebuilding efforts in post-conflict countries. This book is an invaluable resource for scholars and students in Media and Communication studies, Conflict Resolution, International Relations, Genocide Studies, Peacebuilding and practitioners of media in post-conflict settings.

This book is a result of analytical efforts of the media regulation in Rwanda. Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that freedom of the press is a scarce resource for the establishment of any democracy. Without defining what they want, many countries have borrowed this text and applied it to their constitutions. From my experience, good laws are not enough to make good journalism. It is critical to match the good laws with the practice of the media and see the results. In fact, if one wishes to learn more about the harm of unregulated media, Rwanda would be a good example because of the role media played in the 1994 Tutsi genocide. That media regulation should be left in the hands of media professionals is also an ethical question because professionals without good conscience can only harm. Based on the practical experience of the author, this book will help media scholars and policy makers to understand the unexplored areas of media regulation. It will also help you to take informed decisions when it comes to prepare and implement media laws. Hope you will enjoy it and invite others to read it.

This book examines how youth media pedagogy can facilitate young people’s understanding of the social, historical and political contexts that shape their lives. It also explores how the practice of youth media facilitates the production of knowledge and culture by subjects who are misrepresented and under-represented in mainstream media. In Part One, I theorize Global Action Project’s youth media practice, based on my personal experiences as co-founder and executive director of this organization. I use the conceptual frameworks of critical literacy, citizens media and cultural production to argue that youth media has the potential to foster young people’s sense of agency and power to affect positive social change in their communities. In Part Two, I test my arguments by engaging youth participants in memory workshops. The memory workshop, a participatory research methodology, allows us to understand the impact that youth media has had on youth, from their own perspectives.

The corrosive effects of sulphate ions in alkaline media have not to date been clearly outlined or defined. Research of sulphate attack is at a critical stage. In spite of meaningful advances in the past few years, this problem is still not well understood. Extensive work by many researchers has been conducted on studies relating to the effect of chloride ions in acidic and alkaline media. The bulk of research work has been done in relation to stainless steels in the above-mentioned media. This research study aims to focus on a more commonly used construction material, mild steel, otherwise known as carbon steel, and to determine and define the effects of sulphate ions on their own and the effect of sulphate ions in the presence of chloride ions in alkaline media. Commercial grade mild steel was tested using the gravimetric and potentiodynamic methods, in alkaline solutions of varying concentrations of sulphate ions together with additions of different concentrations of chloride ions. Results show that mild steel material protection is seriously compromised when in the presence of highly basic media.

Counselling is a fundamental element of nursing and is integral to the provision of high quality nursing care. Despite opportunities for nurses to perform counselling, their ability to effectively provide these services using the skills gained in training is an issue of concern. The study thus examined the training needs, self-efficacy and constraints experienced in the performance of counselling among nurses at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, Kenya. A mixed method approach was employed, utilizing the concurrent triangulation strategy of data collection. The study identified a theory-practice gap in the training of nurses, revealing that the training was insufficient in preparing nurses for counselling tasks. Self-efficacy of nurses was found to be significantly influenced by age experience and additional training . Finally, nurses identified personal and workplace factors as major constraints in counselling performance. These findings pose significant implications for managers and trainers of healthcare professionals in ensuring the facilitation of an enabling environment for the training and practicing of co

The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the effects of new district mathematics curriculum on Nebraska State Accountability-Mathematics (NeSA-M) student cohort scores from 2011 to 2012. This study was significant in isolating variables individual school districts may control in order to do their part in changing the current condition in the United States regarding mathematics learning. The district mathematics curriculum implemented in the fall of 2011 not only contained increases in both content and rigor but also requirements for the learning of content-specific vocabulary, for the learning of literacy strategies to aide mathematical problem solving, and for explaining critical thinking and problem-solving processes in writing. Last, this study was important in that fiscal responsibility and ethics necessitated analysis of spending as the research district spent nearly $2.5 million in developing and implementing the new district mathematics curriculum. Whereas this seminal study indicates statistically significant effects upon student performance on the NeSA-M after implementing district mathematics curriculum, it also implies a need for more research.

Failures of mass movements often result in extensive property damage and loss of human life. It is recognised that ensuring the stability of both natural and man-made slopes continues to be a fundamental issue in geotechnical engineering. There is no universally accepted method for the prevention or correction of landslides. The comparative performance of the various analyses has been carried out successfully using case studies. A visco-plastic flow model has been proposed to estimate lateral forces on piles used for slope stabilisation. Slope stabilisation due to the presence of a row of piles has been investigated using two distinct lateral load estimations. Eight well-known methods of slope stability analyses have been adopted and computer coded to re-calculate FOS values for a slope reinforced by a row of piles. The book is intended primarily for use in university courses, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The author also expects that the book will serve as valuable reference material for practising engineers.

Revision with unchanged content. The use of aggregate data for the calculation of subgroup estimates has been recognized as a methodological challenge with the potential for resulting in substantial bias. A recently developed method of analyzing grouped data allows for the calculation of lower level estimates with corresponding measures of uncertainty and model fit. While the introduction of this new method may allow for the use of grouped data to create estimates of lower level proportions, the use of these estimates for comparing outcomes across areas with measureable contextual influence has not been evaluated. This study aims to assess a recently introduced method of calculating subgroup estimates by evaluating each stage of the process from a contextual effects perspective. This study addressed the following questions: - Can subgroup estimates produced by this method account for differences in outcomes that extend beyond differenced in group demographics? What assumptions do these methods make about the nature of differences across groups? This book is addressed to social and behavioral researchers working with individual-level and grouped data.

I have not met an educator who enjoys having students regurgitate information without taking the time to internalise the given facts and arrive at their own conclusions after much analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Have you? Everyone wants a winner! All stakeholders see the need for critical thinkers. Most books and websites on critical thinking focus on its knots and bolts: what it is; what it is not; how you can teach it; do’s and don’ts; and how you can assess it. This book is different! It shows you how you can use assessment (that is accepted as compulsory in all courses/programmes) to hone critical thinking skills. Because everyone already accepts assessment it is easier to convince the greatest skeptic about the importance of critical thinking. The shared examples show how the critical thinking principles I have taught my students through the medium of assessment have enabled them to be enormously successful. This book is useful not only for teachers, parents, administrators, students and well wishers, but also for employers, government officials, and researchers who value the potential of their human resource and celebrate the contribution they can make in the workplace.

Microfinance became a popular tool for economic development and poverty alleviation currently. It is adapted by developing nations and in Sub-Saharan Africa as a tool/strategy for economic development. The active poor are excluded from the formal finance sector due to lack of collateral as a result of poverty. However the poor constitute the largest proportion of the bankable populace in developing countries. This also renders the active poor a potential market for exploitation by MNCs. The microfinance phenomenon is introduced in Ghana to alleviate poverty and extend formal financial services to the poor. In order to achieve the poverty alleviation, include the excluded and remain sustainable, needs innovative policy and services. These can only be done by assessing the extent of change in beneficiaries as a result of the microfinance intervention, hence assessing the effects of microfinance in Ghana. It was established that beneficiaries experienced positive impacts as a result of the microfinance intervention. However, there were also some negative effects such as pressure from repayment and family relations.

The stability assessment of earth slopes is one of the fundamental calculations in geotechnical engineering. The most commonly used methods for slope stability assessment is based on the limit equilibrium method of slices. In these methods, the potential sliding mass is subdivided into a number of vertical slices. The analysis is based on generation of the trial failure surfaces and evaluation of the safety factor corresponding to each trial surface. The critical failure surface is a surface with the lowest factor of safety. Generally, the problem of locating the critical failure surface associated with the minimum factor of safety may be formulated as an optimization problem and an effective optimization algorithm could provide a reliable solution. In this book, first the available global optimization techniques and limit equilibrium methods of slices will be reviewed. Afterwards, an effective global optimization algorithm based on particle swarm optimization will be presented. Also, application of the new algorithm for slope stability analysis and evaluation of minimum factor of safety and its associated critical failure surface will be discussed in detail.

The role of the media under a monolithic one party system and under the multi party system has been confusing. The growth of the sector and its diversity is seen as seriously compromised by the political controls and the state and party ownership of various critical channels of communication. These kinds of political interferences and control have tended to reduce the effective functional roles of the media as a watchdog on behalf of the majority who do not belong to the ruling elite.

After being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2009, Herta Muller attained great prominence around the world. Commentators, especially in English-speaking countries, seemed shocked by the decision. One of the primary concerns was that Muller was relatively unknown. This work seeks to address this and other concerns by looking at reviews of her works in German- and English-language publications both before and after the Nobel Prize was awarded. This thesis analyses chronologically the reception of her books beginning with Niederungen in 1982 and ending with the reception of her novel Atemschaukel in 2009. It compares the reception of the original German text to that of the English translation; therefore only works which have been translated and published in English are discussed. While Muller's work did not top the bestseller charts, at least before the Nobel Prize, she was hardly the completely unknown author that some in the English-language media believed. This work seeks to present trends in the reception as well as provide a basis for further study of the reception of Herta Muller.

The book attempts to provide a critical assessment of microfinance as a strategy for poverty reduction in Nigeria. It argues that while microfinance has developed some innovative management and business strategies, its impact on poverty reduction remains in doubt. Microfinance, however, certainly plays an important role in providing safety-net and consumption smoothening. However, for any significant dent on poverty the focus of public policy should be on growth-oriented and equity-enhancing programs, such as broad-based productive employment creation. There is also need to design financial sustainable models that increases outreach and scale up operations for the poor. More so, financial inclusion agenda should be considered and adopted in a concerted manner.

On Facebook, people are revealing more about themselves than ever before including likes, opinions and preferences. With over a billion monthly active users many businesses are realising the potential of advertising on the site and becoming publishers to inform the public about their products and services. In this new paradigm, transparency is important and both people and brands are attempting to accurately represent themselves on the social networking service. This study analysed whether Facebook can be used to control, or influence the desires of the public and examined the infrastructure that delivers an interactive experience to hundreds of millions of users every day. This research outlines the methods used to manipulate consent and introduces Herman and Chomsky’s (1994) institutional critique of media behaviour and performance. Facebook’s ability to manufacture dissent was also considered and the study examined the role the social networking service played in popular uprisings and civil unrest around the world. The findings highlight the need to know more about the power of algorithms, but also the assumptions that social networks build into the algorithm architectures.

In discourse analysis the main focus is on language in context, or in other words how language is used and to what purpose. This research focuses on how Finnish mass media use language, how they represent a Finnish politician, Jussi Halla-aho. This work will also include a small comparative section between Finnish and non-Finnish media as a teaser to see if there is a difference. There were two study questions: 1. How do Finnish mass media represent Halla-aho and 2. How do non-Finnish mass media represent Halla-aho. As a qualitative research the idea is to analyze and to give information on the case of representation of Halla-aho. Ideas about language use and features of mass media that are commonly accepted in (critical) discourse analysis serve as the theoretical framework. Halla-aho has received a lot attention in Finnish mass media and this research should help shed some light on what the nature of this news coverage is.

The development has been the fruitful transition of a vision whose seeds were sown with the ascendance of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said on the throne. Particularly distinguishing is the ever increasing media scene in Oman. From a single newspaper in 1971 to the present multi-edition daily bilingual press, the presence of homegrown TV network and access to regional Arabic press besides global English media. This book is an attempt to critically analyze the working of the media institutions, platforms and the effects of their contents and practices. The book presents an assortment of research studies which reflect the native perspectives. The book is unique and is first in many ways. It is among the first books to contain studies carried out by the group which is the most frequent user and perhaps the most impacted media consumer section of the Omani society- the youth.
